We have an opening for a Material Scientist, Materials Engineer, Polymer Engineer, or related field to joing the Fuel Staff Research Center at our facility in Honeoye Falls, near Rochester, NY.? Successful candidates will join a team with an emphasis on failure analysis, materials development, and specification of Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell (PEFC) materials.


Provide materials engineering support for PEFC research, development, and commercialization

Enable fuel cell component and hardware development through material characterization, failure analysis, materials selection and specification, and fabrication process selection and development

Apply advanced ex-situ characterization and diagnostic methods to understand fundamental mechanisms

Plan work, perform characterization, oversee characterization, oversee experiments, analyze data, draw conclusions, report results, and interface with materials labs and suppliers?

Generate hypotheses for material degradation mechanisms as well as to construct and execute plans to support or refute hypotheses in laboratory experiments and/or mathematical models.

Document experimental and laboratory findings and present in writing in a logical, clear, and technically sound manner.?

Identify and delegate work for laboratory technicians that is suitable to their capability and to engage them in projects in motivating ways.

Impact projects by reading, understanding, and applying technical literature as well as by identifying and approaching technical experts outside General Motors.

Effectively interface with material suppliers by communicating targets, receiving and testing materials, feeding back results, and making recommendations for next steps.

Contribute to generation of patentable concepts and to document and communicate those ideas to management and patent decision committee.

Present results (both verbally and in writing) to a variety of audiences including technicians, peers, technical and non-technical managers.

Present results at external technical conferences and to effectively report back to GM on the relevant content from technical conferences.

We are seeking engineers/scientists with experience and training in materials characterization, material failure analysis, and root cause methodology. We anticipate that the successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in polymer materials and their structure, properties, characterization, fabrication methods, and degradation modes.?


Candidates should possess a MS degree in material science or polymer engineering (with an emphasis on failure analysis) or equivalent training with 5-10 yrs experience.

Candidates must be experienced with materials problem solving using optical and electron microscopes, micro-structural, chemical, thermal, physical, and mechanical characterization methods of organic and inorganic materials.

Candidates must be knowledgeable in failure analysis problem solving methods such as FMEA, fault trees, Red-X, statistical approaches (DOE), TRIZ, and robust engineering.?

Understanding of engineering theory and principles of operation of mechanical/electrical mechanisms

Exhibits appropriate interpersonal styles and communication methods to work effectively with business partners to meet mutual goals

High level analytical ability where problems are unusual and complex
