Controls Specialist High Speed Data Acquisition

Indiana University Cyclotron Facility is seeking a Controls /High Speed Data Acquisition Specialist in our Electrical Engineering Department to be responsible for the design, implementation and verification of high speed analog and digital circuits and systems for data acquisition and signal processing. Focus of the position will include designing high speed signal processing and data acquisition systems and subsystems to support scientific activities at IUCF in the areas of nuclear physics, neutron scattering, detector development, and accelerator operations, including high speed control systems for klystrons and RF amplifiers.  Duties will include working with scientific and technical staff to develop design specifications and formal design criteria. Additionally, this position will be responsible for development and implementation of final design solutions at the chip, board, and system level based on design criteria. Other requirements include simulation of appropriate components of systems and subsystems, building prototypes, supervising construction, and developing test procedures and documentation. This position will also participate in developing proposals, including cost and time estimates, for future projects.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Requires BSEE or M.S. in Physics with experience in high speed data acquisition or equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
3+ years experience in FPGA or ASIC logic design using VHDL or Verilog, from concept through to production with at least 1 years implementing chip-level solutions. Familiarity with Xilinx ISE tools preferred.
3+ years experience with analog circuit design for multichannel nuclear/particle detector systems or in related fields, e.g., ultrasound imaging.
3+ years experience in multilayer surface-mount mixed-signal printed circuit board layout.  Preferences include Familiarity with PADS and/or P-CAD, good working knowledge of the physics and operating characteristics or nuclear/particle detectors including scintillators, photomultiplier tubes, and proportional and drift detectors. Proficiency in analog and digital simulation techniques including VHDL or Verilog and SPICE. Possess embedded system experience working with real-time system constraints. Familiarity with RTOS such as VxWorks or QNX preferred. Experience with VME and/or PCI systems is expected, preferably including design of boards interfacing to VME and/or PCI. Direct experience implementing FPGA high speed (>50 MHz) logic designs with multiple clock domains. Cognizant of hardware signal integrity issues and design mitigation approaches. Experience interfacing devices to microprocessor control and memory interfaces, including high speed parallel and serial buses. Experience designing with fiber optic serial links. Working knowledge of unix/linux and C or C++ programming. Some experience writing data acquisition software and/or device drivers is desirable. Experience with any of the following would be beneficial: feedback control systems, digital signal processing, electromagnetics, accelerator technology (especially cyclotrons and linear accelerators), RF power systems, medical imaging, radiation therapy.
