Starkey Laboratories, Inc. is the world's largest hearing device manufacturer. Headquartered in Eden Prairie, MN, we are looking for an experienced manager for our Director of Mechanical Engineering opportunity.

The Director of Mechanical Engineering will be responsible for Mechanical Product Development. In addition, this position will work with other engineering groups (Applications Engineering, Advanced Technology and Research, etc.) as well as Product Management, Quality and other development groups. This position is also responsible for the Machine/Tool Shop and the Plastic Injection Molding Operation.

This position is responsible for management and development of creative and innovative concepts of new and existing products that will result in mechanical enclosures packaging, ITE faceplates or BTE/OTE housings and mechanical assemblies.

Approach - Performance of Duties (What to Do)

Develop the KPLD (Toyota) product development process within Mechanical Engineering.
Create KPLD center of excellence within the Mechanical Engineering Group.
Develop deep-seated hearing aid industry knowledge within the Mechanical Engineering Group.
Manage and develop mechanical design concepts for one or more of the following areas: Enclosures packaging, ITE faceplates or BTE housing, and mechanical assemblies.
Estimate the cost of products.
Provide direct support to the product-manufacturing group as required.

Deployment - Essential Job Functions (How to Do It)

Deploy KPLD Set-Based design practices within the group.
Create KPLD knowledge management system built upon Limit Curves.
Engineers visit customer sites as part of the project along with Product Manager.
Engineers work closely with manufacturing in design and build of new products.
Create supporting processes and deliver design concepts to upper management.
Build prototypes as directed.
Decide on material requirements for specific applications.
Use a 3D modeling CAD workstation to illustrate industrial designs.
Develop and communicate mechanical design roadmap.
Create cost structure for product plastic and associated components (battery contacts, etc.)
Institute design for manufacturing (DFMA) methodology.

Performance Measure of Duties

Set-Based design process instituted within the Mechanical Engineering Group.
Limit Curve database established and used by the Mechanical Engineering Group.
Visits to hearing aid dispenser offices and first time build of product developed.
Execute product roadmap activities.
Early on in each project determine estimated BOM for mechanical components.
Starkeyize DFMA with Manufacturing and deploy.




Other Duties (Non Measurable)

Check and verify quality.

Support corporate health and safety objectives.
React to change productively and handle other essential duties as assigned.



This position has direct reports including: Injection Lab manager, Machine Shop manager and Mechanical Design manager.

Confidential information:

Jobholder will have access to new and existing product design, corporate/departmental budgeting information, and employee review information including financial information.

Working Conditions: Normal office/lab conditions

Equipment Operation: Familiarity with - SGI computer with SDRC I-DEAS software, Pro/E, MS project, Excel or equivalent, Machine Shop tools

Requirements:

Minimum education, certification and experience requirements

Education: 4-year degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design Engineering, or related design field required.

Experience: Minimum 2 years experience in related design engineering activities with a background in plastic design required. 5-10 years management experience required.


Knowledge of plastic materials required
Knowledge of Mechanical design required
Knowledge of statistical process control desirable

Ability to work well with numbers is required
Good oral presentation and communication skills a must
