ELECTRICAL PRINCIPAL, SUCCESSFUL, PRESTIGIOUS & HIGH SPIRITED CONSULTING FIRM
ELECTRICAL PRINCIPAL, SUCCESSFUL, PRESTIGIOUS & HIGH SPIRITED CONSULTING FIRM
We are looking for a PE electrical engineer with ten or more years experience as a consulting engineer working on electrical power systems for buildings, with emphasis on highly reliable power systems. We can bring a qualified person in as a principal, and we have a great deal to offer in terms of the quality of the working experience, stability of the company, depth of the local market in terms of project scope and sophistication, potential for continued learning, potential for career growth and reward for personal performance. Where the differences between the overall working experience and financial rewards afforded in miscellaneous engineering firms becomes blurry, we sincerely believe we can show you differentiation that makes joining our team a definitive step up.
THE BASIC INGREDIENTS THAT MAKE UP THIS GOODNESS ARE: Electrical leadership with very strongly evolved emotional intelligence and personal integrity.
Electrical leadership that is inherently personable, fun and fair.
Electrical leadership that is vital and heavily sales oriented. The fact that they are young (20+ years to go for all the electrical rainmakers) and very good at generating the business is helpful to all of us.
A culture that is dedicated to the suppression of politics, with a focus on genuine engineering.
An unflappable marketplace, unstoppable local economy and sixty+ years of history of real performance in that local economy.
A proven willingness to pay staff that makes us money. Focused personal reward is part of the system.
Killer benefits.
Nice working conditions and first class tools and systems.
The highest morale in the business. We allow our characters to be characters as long as they get the job done.
Really!
HOW WE WORK
The simple distillation is that we have two distinct client paths. We have a very good internal architectural community, and some of the work we do is for that internal client. We are just as aggressive about marketing our services directly to external clients looking to us for engineering services not bundled with architectural services. Ala Carte electrical engineering is a big part of the practice. The work we pursue is specialized commercial, institutional, and critical systems electrical engineering. Generally the electrical power systems we design are in buildings.
The principal we wish to bring in we hope to be a specialist in critical power systems. The simplest way to provide a specific example here is to point to electrical power systems designed for tier III or IV datacenters, but the same demands may apply to critical surgical centers, facilities handling nerve agents, laboratories and class 1 cleanrooms, traffic and transit controls systems, network operating centers, command control centers, and generally anything that uses electrical power you really do not want to allow to fail at any level, and that is contained in a building. I keep referring to buildings because we really do not address industrial requirements such as steel processing, petrochemical and controls for drawbridges or offshore platforms. It is robust, high reliability systems in buildings.
WHAT A PRINCIPAL DOES THAT ASSOCIATES DO NOT OR CANNOT DO
We are looking for a person who has come up through the consulting engineering ranks and has seen the world of production electrical engineering. This is a person who knows how to engage a client, to perform feasibility work, and to deal with the business portions of a project as well as the empirical engineering elements. We are also looking for a great engineer with genuine engineering acumen, creativity and talent that is a standout. We are looking for the abilities to manage, delegate, teach, train and mentor junior engineers. Finally, we are looking for a solid client personality. Not reaching as far as asking for a rainmaker, we are looking for an individual that can command a meeting and instill confidence in clients when called upon. In the end, every person in a service business should sell whenever and wherever possible. We expect all our staff to promote and network to the extent of their personal capacity to do so. The big bonus dollars have been paid to those who have built relationships and bring in work, so it is worth making that reasonable extra effort to reach out to those you will work for and make that experience pleasant and easy for the clients.
THE SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE IN QUESTION
Critical power electrical engineering is more than designing in redundancy. While it is true that many critical facilities have dual utility feeds, a variety of UPS systems, paralleling backup generators and complex transfer facilities, and sophisticated grounding and bonding schemes, a complete critical power engineering campaign includes complex human/interface engineering work and broad mechanical systems considerations. We do not expect our electrical leadership to be mechanical engineers as well, but issues of airflow and cooling requirements and the ability to team with and reach complete solutions working with our mechanical engineers is part of the job. Every past experience, say experience with acoustics when dealing with high-velocity airflow as an example, becomes part of the mental catalog of the seasoned pro. We would like to find leadership with an evolved experience catalog of unique experience. We would like to find talent, which we loosely define as the ability to take that personal catalog of unique experiences and combine them in new and creative ways to solve problems.
We expect electrical engineering leadership to have a passionate interest in the field. We expect leadership to be current in terms of product innovations, trends, and general advancements in the field.
We could list out calculations you should have performed, study types and software systems you should have mastered. If you have a strong project history of sophisticated personal electrical design adventures as a consultant, and a project list rich with critical electrical power systems, I suspect the laundry list of skills is one you could write. A registered professional electrical engineer who has a career of engineering and project management in critical power systems and a project portfolio to back that up will suffice.
WHY TALK TO US
At about the career point we are talking about here, you are either pretty darn near the top of the pile in your firm, or you are in the wrong place. At the point you can be looked upon as a seasoned professional, you have enough experience to evaluate the goodness of your own circumstances. I should not have to write the checklist here either, but for grins and giggles; we would like to find a passionate and talented engineer suppressed by cronyism or furtive office politics. We can list hundreds of reasons for considering change, from company financial woes to interoffice romances gone bad, but this position puts you one from VP, and can refresh a career influenced badly by partnership problems, mergers and acquisitions and all the changes have gotten in the way of getting the real engineering work done. Chemistry and camaraderie are big issues as we enter the advanced stages of career, and you cannot sit and hypothecate all of that. Sometimes it makes sense to have a quiet confidential chat with the new possibilities to feel out the potential for a new home.
All the basic reasons to trade life?s time for work will be here. Great benefits, and I mean great benefits. We will pay you enough. If you do extraordinary work and prosecute it profitably, you will receive substantive bonus. We have managed to keep our strong engineers, and while camaraderie helps them enjoy the working experience, I assure you that the remuneration is in place right along side the positive environment. In our competitive marketplace and given our exposure, it must be so.
OUR CULTURE
We are heading towards 1,000 engineers. We have been around for sixty + years. We are coast-to-coast and key international locations. We are rated as a top-10 firm by every publication chartered to monitor and evaluate the industry. Our engineering specialties, beyond the critical power engineering, include general electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, plumbing and piping, structural engineering, communications infrastructure specialties engineering, audio/visual engineering, medical equipment and communications engineering and integrated electronic security. For a big and prestigious firm, we are perhaps the least rigid and regimented firm around. We allow qualified engineers to find their own ways to solutions, and to engage business that they can evaluate and ascertain to be good business. Remarkable for the absence of strict operational rules, regulations, and procedures, we have allowed creative people to do it their own way, which has proven to make them more productive and certainly more creative. That is not to say that we do not have good administrative systems, conventions, record keeping systems and cutting edge enterprise resource management: we do. What is being said is that within an essential framework of ?must haves? that are centuries honored in business, we allow as much operational latitude and creativity as any firm of any size. We are a big but entirely agile entity. We encourage entrepreneurialism and business creativity. We reward professionals that reach and mobilize resources to address the new boundaries they have established. We allow our proven staff to take good business risks. We are open to new ways, ideas, markets and challenges. We support professional education and peer interface. Your boss is a gentleman in every regard, and a person that will back you up and accrue and recognize your good service. We are a great system.
