ENGINEERING: OFFICER OPPORTUNITIES
Serving part-time in the Navy Reserve allows you to pursue the advantages of civilian life while enjoying the camaraderie, challenges, and many benefits the military offers. Whether or not you have prior service in the military, as a Navy Reservist, you will proudly serve your country as you increase your overall opportunities for success. In exchange, you?ll be rewarded with benefits designed to help you succeed in both your military and civilian lives.
Engineering in the Navy Reserve
Direct the repair of rain-damaged roads. Rebuild a village in support of tsunami relief efforts. Spearhead the planning and construction of a $20 million, 12-story Bachelor Enlisted Quarters. From city-size bases and airfields to harbor facilities, every year the Navy spends billions of dollars to support and grow its high-tech force of ships, aircraft, support equipment, and personnel. As an Officer in the Navy Reserve Civil Engineer Corps, you?ll be counted on to oversee new construction projects. You may find yourself piecing together satellite images to form large image maps of a foreign town destroyed by an earthquake or flood or providing important information for rescue efforts here at home.
As a CEC Officer, you may work in any or all of the following areas:
Contract Management: Be the primary contact between the Navy and contractors. Solicit and manage bids. Supervise construction and troubleshoot issues.
Public Works: Supervise and maintain utilities at shore facilities. Oversee construction and repair. Manage budgets and approve public works plans.
Construction Battalion: Support Naval and Marine activities in the field overseas. Command 400 to 600 Enlisted workers in constructing airfields, bridges, ports, or buildings.
Qualifications
To become a CEC Officer in the Navy Reserve, you must have at least a bachelor?s degree in engineering from a college accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology or a bachelor?s degree in architecture from a program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board. Preferred engineering fields of study are civil, mechanical, electrical, mining, petroleum, or architectural. A degree in engineering technology is acceptable if you have an Engineer-in-Training certificate.
Training
If you have prior military service, you can attend the Engineering Duty Course at Engineering Duty School, Vallejo, California. Otherwise, you can attend the Direct Commission Officer Course in Pensacola, Florida, for your first Annual Training. The next Annual Training will be spent at a naval shipyard. Follow-up assignments include a sea tour, Engineering Officer School, and mobilization site, in succession. After completing the training course, Officers must successfully pass an oral examination.
Serving as a CEC Officer will hone your leadership abilities and project management skills to their maximum potential. Our ranks are made up of the most focused individuals looking to support their country as they increase their scope of opportunity.
