Engineer - Breakthrough Engineered Components

The person in this position will be responsible for leading individual projects related to Engineered Components (EC) through all stages of technology development, including commercialization. This will generally require the incumbent to:

?Interface with colleagues in Business Units to understand product and market needs and to translate that knowledge into goals and objectives for assigned technology programs.
?Work as a member of cross-functional team of technology, marketing and manufacturing during the technology development process to ensure commercial viability of new processes.
?Develop project plans consistent with established goals and objectives.
?Work hands-on, as well as lead development project team within a structured Technology Development Process to achieve the project objectives
?Identify required resources internally, externally (e.g. local shops, universities, government labs, industry partners) and across disciplines, that are needed to achieve project objectives.
?Keep all individual projects progressing at an accelerated pace and within budget.
?Support the operating units in commercialization of products that emanate from breakthrough projects.
?Take necessary precautions during the development projects to ensure that Kennametal Intellectual Property is protected.
?Apply their technical knowledge in support of due-diligence related to technology sourcing and/or M&A.

Experience and Skills:
The position requires a PhD in Material Science or Mechanical Engineering, preferably with experience, a MS with 9 years, or Bachelor of Science degree with 12 years of relevant experience. The incumbent must have background and experience in functional design of material systems, including metals and ceramics. Demonstrated applied knowledge of physical metallurgy and microstructure-properties relationship, as well as strong background in materials mechanical behavior and test methods are required. Understanding of fracture mechanics and experience with micro-mechanical modeling is a plus. Background and experience in joining of similar and dissimilar materials is a plus. The incumbent must possess strong analytical and problem solving skills and have demonstrated ability to apply scientific tools, such as statistical and other mathematical tools, design of experiment, etc., to analyzing data. Ability to work in a team environment, strong interpersonal and leadership skills are essential. Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, and be capable of representing Kennametal externally through publications and participation in technical symposia and trade shows. A demonstrated track record of delivering new products to the market is desired, and strong project management skills are strongly preferred.
