Engineer / Naval Architect (Ship Structures)

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has an immediate opening for Naval Architects to work as Ship Structural Engineers at our headquarters in Houston, TX.

 

Engineers in Ship Structures conduct technical plan reviews for compliance with various Rules, Regulations, Statutory Requirements, and contractual commitments.  Reviews include evaluating vessel strength (including plating, beams, girders, rudders, etc.) to meet section modulus, buckling and shear requirements.  Reviews also focus on SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea), structural fire protection, life saving appliances and cargo securing methods.  Engineers provide technical advice to Surveyors, propose recommendations for changes in methods, procedures or vessel designs; and work closely with ABS clients to identify and resolve technical and service issues.

 

Qualified candidates must possess a Bachelors Degree in Naval Architecture from an accredited university or college and have 5 years vessel design experience.  A Bachelors Degree in other engineering disciplines (Marine, Ocean, Structural, or Civil) may be considered pending work experience.  Potential ABS employees should be detail oriented, able to work in a team environment or autonomously, and demonstrate a track record of success and dedication in past employment.  Candidates must possess a professional fluency (verbal and written) in English and be able to communicate effectively on client service issues and various technical / engineering topics
