The deepwater Gulf of Mexico (GOM) is one of the most significant components of BP's growth strategy. The New Developments Performance Unit is part of the GOM Deepwater Projects Business Unit and is responsible for establishing appraisal strategies and progressing options to commercialize the recent discoveries in the deepwater GOM. The Development Engineering team within the New Developments Performance Unit provides specialized technical support to the appraisal teams in the area of facilities engineering from the wellhead to the sales pipeline.
The Development Engineering team is seeking a Front End Loading (FEL) Subsea Engineer to play a key role in directing the full range of subsea engineering appraise stage activities. Specifically, this person will evaluate tieback versus full field stand alone development concepts. This person will also liaise with other project team disciplines including flow assurance process engineers, marine engineers, reservoir engineers, planning, cost estimating and commercial analysts, substructure engineers and seismic engineers.
Accountabilities Include:
Generate subsea production system functional specifications and layouts.
Derive flowline system routing configurations and outlining of specifications in areas of high currents.
Develop reliability and qualification plans.
Appraise subsea umbilical risers and flowlines, high integrity pipeline protection systems and other options.
Conduct feasibility studies for tie-ins and tie-backs.
Develop installation task methodologies, vessel requirements and estimation of task durations with the knowledge of short weather windows.
Appraise novel technologies (including subsea boosting, electric flowline heating) and determine the benefits, risks and estimated costs of adopting such innovations.
Conduct cost estimate benchmarking to support the project cost and schedule engineer.
Consider system operability, flow assurance constraints and intervention in short weather windows.
Evaluate system integrity issues including material selection and corrosion/erosion mitigation measures.
Provide requirements for engineering data collection for system designs.
Work collaboratively with technical specialists in BP's Exploration and Production Technology Group, external engineering contractors, process equipment vendors and the supply chain management team.
Required Qualifications:
To be considered for the role of FEL Subsea Engineer applicants must have:
A minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or equivalent, preferably in mechanical or chemical engineering.
Experience with subsea engineering.
Legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than your current employer.
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the required qualifications the successful candidate is likely to be able to demonstrate:
A minimum of 10 years of offshore engineering experience with the majority in subsea engineering.
Strong knowledge of subsea production system architectures, main components and key design drivers, including pigging, testing, hydrate, wax management and flow assurance issues, control systems, re-injection and intervention.
Knowledge of the main well system and topsides processing unit interfaces, including well instrumentation requirements, workovers, riser interfaces and topsides systems for subsea equipment.
Familiarity with flowline and riser key design and installation drivers, including thermal insulation, installation requirements and limitations, design options, flowline stability and buckling requirements.
A working knowledge of project management and stage gated processes.
Ability to challenge conventional practice by using innovation and new technology to reduce capital and operating costs.
Familiarity with risk mapping and mitigation.
Familiarity with requirements for engineering data collection for the design of systems.
Knowledge of BP, competitor, and contractor best practices.
Ability to define and prioritize issues and handle multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
Excellent networking and communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team.
