Inspection & Assessment Engineer

ALSTOM Power, Inc., a global leader and provider of power generation engineering, products, and services, is seeking an Inspection & Assessment Engineer for its GT/CC Engineering Services department.  The individual will judge the life left in components by classification according to component specific assessment criteria based at our Midlothian, VA location.

 Basic Functions

 

The tasks of the Inspection & Assessment Engineer (ISAE) comprise of safe, technically detailed and efficient inspection during overhauls outages or inspection outages of GT24 gas turbine plants (to be referred to as inspections) within the specified deadlines and according to requirements as defined by component specific inspection procedures. An important part of the duties will be to judge the life left in components by classification according to component specific assessment criteria.

 

This position is based in Midlothian, VA however significant periods of travel are required in order to conduct inspections at customer sites in the USA and overseas.

 

Working in conjunction with the Inspection & Assessment Manager (ISAM), the ISAE ensures that all the findings and experience gained from inspection assignments are made available to the specialist offices responsible for development, design and product support by means of qualified experience feedback.

 

For this purpose and also to build up his own experience, the ISAE cooperates closely with the responsible specialist offices.

 

The time periods between inspection assignments are used to evaluate the findings together with the persons responsible in the specialist offices concerned.

 

The ISAE is responsible for the quality of their work.

 Essential Functions

The essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to the following:

The Inspection & Assessment Engineer (ISAE) carries out preparations at home base together with the specialist offices responsible with regards to:
Concepts
Specifying documents (eg. Field Service Instructions, FSIs)
Experience and evaluations of previous inspections
Inspection & test plans, test certificates
Instruments, tools and consumables

 

The ISAE is responsible for the process specifications being met. He critically examines the process specifications, the measured variables of components and systems to make sure they are within specification.

 

Within the context of fact-finding, the ISAE assesses parts, components and systems in the course of inspections as well as after cases of damage or malfunctions and submits proposals for the further use of components and parts.

 

The ISAE must be competent at performing boroscope inspections and during short inspections handle them independently.

 

The ISAE fills in the appropriate test certifications to document the tests and inspections performed.

 

The ISAE maintains a list of pending items and a log book covering the work done and machine-related events.

 

After the ISAE returns to the office, they participate in the assessment of the findings and the solution finding process for necessary improvements. For this, he works together with the specialist offices responsible. As a result, he ensures experience feedback and builds up his own technical competence.

 Associate Qualifications
Degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or equivalent job experience
Practical experience with turbine inspections
Knowledge about properties of Nickel based superalloys, their mechanical behavior and deterioration under stress
Business computer applications
Written and spoken English
In-depth knowledge of the assembly of the GT thermal block
Operation of boroscopes for inspections
Flexible, willing to handle office work and activities in the plant. Willing to to travel at short notice.
