Material Development Engineer

The Material Development Engineer requires a creative, multi-skilled, self-directed and results oriented individual.  This role will be responsible for the development of chemical sensor technology to support the "Smart Safety" concepts. This individual will develop and lead technology platforms for a new significant global business opportunity within 3M's Occupational Health & Environmental Safety Division. 

 

This person will be a key contributor to the research and development effort for the "Smart Safety" platform. He/she would contribute to IP assessment of relevant technologies and product concepts.  This individual will closely collaborate with systems integration engineers during the development phases.  This person will participate on a cross functional team to refine and validate the ?Smart Safety? business concept and conduct primary market research to define, develop and evaluate multiple ?Smart Safety? concepts and develop and rank superior product/service concepts. 

 

He/she will leverage technical expertise from the Trace & Trace Emerging Business Opportunity (EBO) group and the Software, Electronic, and Mechanical, Systems, (SEMS) group.  This person will have primary responsibility for defining and validating the performance characteristics of sensors and their suitability within the ?Smart Safety?. 

 

 The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:

? Background in Chemical Sensor networks

? Proven capability to work cross functionally and globally

? Experience in technology/product development

? Proven product commercialization experience

? Experience in the industrial safety market 

 

 Experience

? Creativity and problem solving ability with a tolerance for ambiguity

? Team player and self motivated individual who thrives on complex technical challenges

? Strong communication skills

? Interdisciplinary skills to successfully participate in a dynamic team environment

? Technical knowledge in chemical sensors and materials

? PhD in Materials Science/Chemistry related to chemical or environmental sensor technology

? Experience with developing analytical devices and/or applied physical chemistry
