This position in Broadband Technologies will be focused primarily on working with network engineers to design and qualify new network architectures based on business requirements. The candidate is expected to lead architecture validations and test new network equipment in a lab environment. The candidate will be exposed to multiple IP network platforms, including Cisco routers and switches, Redback and Juniper B-RAS (Broadband Remote access Aggregation Routers). Tools used in Covad?s lab include IXIA, Smartbits, and Adtech. The ideal candidate will have previous experience defining NSP services and has validated these services in controlled environments. You will work with a small team of network engineers, in a fast-paced and challenging environment.

Responsibilities CDesign, engineer, and evolve Covad's Data and VoIP network infrastructure to meet current and future business needs. Evolution needs include, but are not limited to: IP backbone development, IP Peering, and Multicast services. Act as subject matter expert for all IP-routing related issues, providing Tier 4 support to Network Operations. Mentor junior and mid-level network engineers. Lead hardware and software evaluations, contributing to the ongoing maintenance and evolution of Covad's IP infrastructure. Manage timelines and resources with associated projects. Generate test plans based on network design requirements. Publish test reports for peer review. Produce network procedures and configuration guides for use by Network Engineering & Operations, promoting consistency across the network. Work closely with cross-organizational teams on the implementation and deployment of new network services and technologies. Work closely with Network OSS Software Engineering teams for enhancements to Covad?s Network facing OSS Systems. This includes high-level SNMP alarming, statistical collection, and new service feature requirements. Own the technical relationship with equipment vendor(s), ensuring Covad's interests are represented in future software and hardware.      



Qualifications Direct experience in large-scale enterprise / service provider network design is mandatory. Theoretical and practical application of protocols required. Expert knowledge in TCP/IP, OSPF, BGP required. Strong background in Cisco IOS, routers, and switches required. Meticulous lab testing capabilities, including generating test plans based on technical requirements. UNIX Shell scripting skills desired. (Linux / Solaris) Theoretical and practical application of Layer 2 VPNs (PWE3, MPLS) desired. Understanding of ATM networking is highly desirable. Experience using packet generators and analyzers desirable: Ethereal, IXIA, Adtech, etc. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proven project management skills required. Must work well in team environment. Requires a Bachelor's degree in CSC, CPE, MIS, EE, or related Network Engineering field. 10 years experience in network architecture, design, implementation, and troubleshooting. .
