PRINCIPAL PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER

The Principal Product Development Engineer analyzes customer / market needs and designs and develops innovative, functional, cost effective solutions.  Working individually (or as part of a team) this position will design, build prototypes, cost estimate, test, and release for production creative new products for specific customer / market needs.  Typically these opportunities are unique applications, outside of existing product lines, entailing innovative solutions using Timken’s core capabilities. This position will also develop the technology associated with our Technology Platforms.  This will involve design, modeling, and test activities.  Most of the technologies will be new to Timken.  Some will be new to the world. Responsibilities include:

 

o Make joint customer calls with product manager and sales engineer to mine new opportunities;
o Develop product concept solving customer / market problems using Timken core capabilities;
o Conduct or champion design, analysis, sampling, piloting, and APQP procedures and documentation for the new product;
o Champion the progress of the project through the stage gate process as detailed in the project charter;
o Work with suppliers to develop and procure components and expertise; and
o Develop the technology knowledge to support Technology Platforms and enable the front end business units to design future products based on these platforms.






Bachelors degree required in Engineering; Masters degree is a plus. Candidate should have strong experience in the design of mechanical components; electro-mechanical (motors, actuators, etc) is desired. Candidate should have experience designing products related to transmission, driveline for automotive customers (valvetrain / engine, clutch, etc); CAD/CAE skills; and have demonstrated creativity (patents issued, published papers, etc). Design for six sigma (DFSS) and experience with Magneto-Rheologic (MR) fluids and MR powders is a plus.
