Principal Human Factors Engineer

Summary:      Provide human factors, ergonomics, user interface, and user-centered design and evaluation leadership for computer and consumer electronics hardware / software products.

 

Essential Responsibilities:      Provide user interface, human factors and ergonomic design expertise in the development of computer and consumer electronic hardware and software. Plan and perform human factors research and evaluation. Provide communication on the investigation of new technology from suppliers and analysis of competitive products which effect product ergonomics, usability, or user interface. Provide competitive research regarding user-oriented features of major competitors.Perform and assist in product design and design reviews. Mentor engineering and product management staff on the inclusion of user-centric design processes. Develop human factors guidelines for product categories. Perform usability and OOBE testing. Work with technical support to understand and resolve user-oriented product issues.Provide a feedback loop to preclude problems as well as fix those that make it into the products. Provide project coordination, and interface with management and senior management in customer support, marketing, product management and engineering.

 

Requirements/Qualifications/Skills:      Expertise in several of the following:

 

- Human factors applied to computer and consumer electronics design.

- Technical understanding of computer architecture / hardware design

- User centered design including the ability to provide innovative design solutions

- Usability engineering principals

- Ergonomic research and design

- User interface design and and software architecture

- Human factors guidelines development

- Research design, statistical methods, and report writing.

- Usability testing

- Graphic design and web/ multi-media development In addition should have the following abilities:

- Project management, including planning, scheduling, and reporting

- Ability to work effectively in teams with limited supervision

- Multi-tasking in a fast paced environment

- Good oral and written communication skills.

- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines

 

Education/Certification:      M.S. or Ph.D. in human factors engineering, cognitive psychology, engineering psychology or closely related field. Prefer undergraduate degree in a technical field other then human factors (such as EE, ME, CS, CE).
