Principle Safety Engineer (Band 6)

This position supports Industrial Hygiene, Safety and Environmental compliance programs at multiple sites, whose purpose is to minimize the number and severity of accidents and injuries while maintaining efficiency of the site and well-being of employees, visitors, customers and the community. These efforts will comply with all federal, state and local laws as well as company/business policies and procedures. Some general position responsibilities include: Support site lead on industrial hygiene, safety and environmental surveys to determine compliance with regulatory criteria relating to employee exposure and environmental discharges involving toxic materials. Advise workplace on technical aspects of occupational safety practices and toxic and hazardous materials used in the workplace. Interface with medical and groups to develop solutions to workplace hazards and exposures. BS degree in safety/health or related technical discipline/engineering area with a minimum of five years, but typically up to ten or more years of experience is desired. Additional academic study in applicable discipline may be used to satisfy some of the experience requirement.
PURPOSE OF POSITION: This position assists with Industrial Hygiene, Safety and Environmental compliance programs on site, whose purpose is to minimize the number and reduce the severity of in-plant accidents and injuries while maintaining efficiency of the site and the well-being of employees, visitors, customers and the community. The program must comply with all federal, state, local laws as well as corporate, ethical, and business policies and procedures.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES *Essential Functions
May be required to maintain "unescorted access" status and must travel to customer and/or vendor sites (at least 50%)
1. Implement business unit and division programs in accordance with federal, state and local health, safety and environmental laws and requirements.
2. Perform industrial hygiene, safety and environmental surveys to determine compliance with regulatory criteria.
3. Advise work place on technical aspects of workplace hazards. Assist with instruction and training programs for the workers.
4. Assist with work place accident and near-miss investigations. Compile data and submit reports and documentation as appropriate. Assist in development of accident prevention programs which lead to improved safety performance.
5. Maintain record keeping responsibilities needed for regulatory and legal compliance matters. Compile and submit reports and documentation as appropriate.
6. Maintain awareness and competency in OSHA, and DEP issues and regulations. Assist as appropriate during regulatory audits and inspections.
7. Assist during asbestos abatement programs for the site.
8. Maintain proactive and visible support position in implementation of related programs.
9. Prepare technical manuals, reports and procedures.
10. Perform work according to scheduler/budgetary requirements.

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS
I. KNOWLEDGE
Incumbent should have extensive knowledge of Federal and State occupational safety, health and environmental laws and good understanding of business unit and product line processes.
Technical Four year academic degree in Health, Safety or Environmental Compliance, with a minimum of five years, but typically up to ten or more years experience in general health, safety and environmental compliance areas or any acceptable combination of education, training or experience.

Certification in safety, industrial hygiene, fire fighting or emergency response desirable. Discovery thinking to potential problems and propose hazard isolation in non-conventional situations. Identification and assessment of hazard control and effective dissemination of site procedures to deal with identified problems.
