RISK CONTROL SPECIALIST

Under technical direction, performs risk control assessment, evaluation, consulting and technical support.  Controls loss exposures and costs, and ensures underwriting profit through the determiniation of risk.  Provides risk assessments for prospective, new and existing business.


Performs a combination of the following duties according to departmental guidelines:
1. Performs workplace/work site risk evaluation and consultative risk improvement services, and makes risk recommendation for the underwriting function.
2. Works with senior risk control staff to assess program needs and implements customized strategy.
3. Partners with underwriting and other areas to provide information for risk evaluation and assessment.
4. Performs root cause loss analysis with rating and trending of losses for key accounts.
5. Develops and maintains business relationships with internal and external business partners.
6. Stays up to date on trends and developments within the area as well as the insurance industry. 
7. May identify opportunities for new products and services.
8. May develop and conduct education and training programs.
9. May provide expertise in specialty areas such as industrial hygiene and safety, fire prevention, workers compensation, general liability, etc.


Additional Responsibilities
1. May provide guidance and assistance to other risk control staff and other functional areas.
2. May be responsible for special projects and presentations.
3. Performs other essential duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Solid technical and product specific expertise, risk control evaluation and assessment skills and knowledge of insurance and risk control principles, practices and procedures.
2. Strong interpersonal, communication, negotiation and presentation skills.  Ability to effectively interact with all levels of internal and external business partners.
3. Strong organizational skills. 
4. Ability to deal with ambiguous situations and issues.
5. Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
6. Ability to work independently.
7. Ability to exercise independent judgement and make critical business decisions effectively.
8. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software. 
9. Ability and willingness to travel extensively.
 
Education and Experience
1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.  Professional designations preferred.
2. Minimum three to five years risk control experience with proven track record of results.
