Scientist/Engineer II-IV # 4136
As a Scientist or Engineer the primary responsibilities include chief operator of the DIII-D Tokamak. The chief operator has responsibility for overall machine and personnel safety when the Tokamak is operational. and monitors and oversees the operation of the Tokamak that consists of a complex set of systems involving high power, high vacuum, intense lasers, high power RF, high energy beams, cryogenic systems, plasma, and radiation producing equipment. The chief operator will also help develop, design, and operate monitoring and control systems for the Tokamak. Other chief operator duties include design and implementation of software and/or hardware to improve or assist in the operation of the Tokamak.

Masters or BS + 2 years relevant experience in physics or related engineering field with an experimental background. Must be a competent programmer in either Fortran or C. Basic knowledge of personal computer use is essential. Candidate must demonstrate a strong ability in verbal and written communication. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule and must work well in a group environment. Candidate must have experience in least one of the following areas: electronics, control systems, high voltage or high power systems, vacuum systems, experimental test equipment. Candidate must have a good safety attitude, be attentive to and follow procedures, be able to develop safety procedures, and be capable of analyzing and responding to potential incidents and events.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of UNIX or IDL computer languages, SQL computer database experience desirable. Background in plasma physics. Familiarity with CAMAC, VME, PLC programming, and computer hardware and networking. Familiarity with Macintosh computers or IBM PC including Excel and Word applications. Familiarity with basic electronics and/or power systems. Capable of becoming a member of the DIII-D Emergency Response Team with training in basic first aid, fire extinguisher use, CPR, SCBA, and emergency procedures.
