SMT Manufacturing Engineer
SUMMARY This position is accountable for developing, evaluating, and improving the production processes and methodologies used to manufacture new and existing products to ensure the efficient, cost-effective manufacture of high quality products in support of strategic objectives. This position focuses on the Surface Mount Technology (SMT) PCBA processes and support and is accountable for the quality performance (process capability) of the products. The position also provides problem-solving support to production team members in order to achieve product quality and delivery-time objectives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Support the SMT manufacturing workcell, by providing programming, process development, and problem solving support for the SMT equipment and processes, including, screen printing, component placement, reflow and AOI.
Develop, introduce, maintain and improve manufacturing processes for new and existing products to assure that effective technology, team member suggestions, and process control techniques are all utilized to produce products which meet customer requirements
Initiate the design for manufacturability (DFM) analysis of new products and develop the processes by which the products will be manufactured (process planning), including routing operations and some fixturing design
Provide support for the manufacturing team, design team, marketing and business teams and external customers by taking ownership of specific product lines with the intent of improving quality and cost performance and chronic manufacturing issues, including long term corrective action
Support quality systems and customer certification initiatives (ISO 9001) by participating in or managing project teams, training groups in quality tools and techniques, and supporting daily shop-floor implementation of these tools, to facilitate the achievement of world-class quality standards
Accurately cost the manufacturing operations by developing and providing the cost structure as well as providing new product assembly cost quotes and evaluating current cost concerns
Provide cost estimates including performing E-201 analysis cost justification for purchases of new equipment
Provide manufacturing expertise to other departments and teams such as Production Teams, Team Managers, Design Engineering, Production & Inventory Control, Finance, Purchasing, Returned Goods, and Marketing to make improvements in product design specifications, methods of manufacture, material requirements and schedules, cost estimating/accounting, and product pricing that will ultimately impact customer satisfaction
Provide quality in all goods and services delivered to internal and external customers through an approach of thorough planning, internal audits, responsible implementation, and continuous improvement
Help develop and maintain departmental measures, and work to improve those measures including continually monitoring established safety and environmental procedures to assure a clean, safe work environment is promoted
Maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that interfaces well with customers, clients, co-workers and management members
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
KNOWLEDGE
Required
Four year college degree with major in Industrial, Mechanical, or Manufacturing Engineering, or similar degree, or equivalent experience
Minimum of 3 years relevant experience
Comprehensive knowledge of PCB Assembly, Surface Mount Technology, and Electro mechanical assembly
Understanding of ISO 9000 requirements as well as any specific customer quality requirements
Strong working knowledge of process control concepts and applications, including process capability
Familiarity with cost accounting
Preferred
Familiar with the European Union RoHS Directive and the associated SMT process changes.
Certification from Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), APICS, or SMT
Involved with groups in the electronic manufacturing industry, including SMTA and AME
Prior experience in delivering training, or public speaking, to small groups
Prior experience in implementing Lean Manufacturing Concepts in an electronic assembly environment

Skills in writing process instructions (routings), and bill of materials (BOM)
PC and on-line computing skills, including ability to operate spreadsheet and word processing software from a Windows environment and use of the ERP system
