Senior Plastics Research Engineer
Job Purpose:
The Senior Plastics Research Engineer will assist in the research of advanced polymer materials for optical films and components using our unique Advanced Polymer Optics? technology.
Key Responsibilities:Investigate and select polymers, processes, additives, and other materials to be used as components within optical films, sheets, and other products based on optical, material, mechanical, rheological, environmental, and other properties. Extrude and cast films on lab scale for evaluation and testing of multi-component film systems.Produce and manage the production of laboratory or pilot scale optical films, sheets, and other products on extrusion lines internally or externally with partners.Interact with optical engineers to research and develop relationships between new materials, processing conditions, and optical properties.Lead internal and external research projects developing novel material combinations and processes to generate new technology and enhance our optical products.Assist in the characterization of materials and components.Provide input and analysis using a computerized database of measurement data from manufactured materials, raw materials, and associated properties.Maintain and organize an adequate supply of materials for production and measurement of lab samples. Specify equipment where necessary to support laboratory sample production.Communicate and report on projects, measurements, analyses, and laboratory equipment.Transfer technology and research to production engineers for scale-up.Assist in the preparation of patents for new materials, processes, or applications.Attend and contribute to Fusion Optix team meetings and general business activities
Qualifications:
The applicant must have at least a Masters Degree in Plastics Engineering or Polymer Science an excellent understanding of the processing conditions of film and sheet extrusion. He/she must understand how processing conditions affect the physical, mechanical, thermal, and optical properties of materials. The applicant should understand and have experience with techniques for measuring material properties. The applicant must have experience extruding and stretching cast film and be able to lead research projects in close collaboration with production personnel. The applicant must be a quick learner and be able to apply newly acquired knowledge in production or lab settings. Experience in nano-materials, polymer blends, optical films, or embossing is a plus. Organizational skills and attention to detail are required.
