Senior Software Engineer with C++ and/or C# expertise

Sage Software has an immediate opening for 2 Sr. Software Engineers in our Herndon, VA office.  This position performs routine, moderately complex as well as very complex systems analysis and programming activities which may require extensive research.  This position is for software engineers who have acquired enough prior academic and industrial experience to assume a technical leadership role in the Organization and independently execute the needs of the business with only broad, high level direction from Sr. Staff. The position will be supporting the Sage E-FAS project.

 

SAGE FAS is the industry-standard Fixed Asset Management software product with over 60% of the Fixed Asset market share.  It is a multi-user 32-bit client-server application which works with multiple ODBC-compliant databases (SQL 2000 and Sybase SQL Anywhere) and is also supported on the Microsoft Terminal Server environment.  Some of the challenges that lie ahead are designing feature enhancements, implementing them as COM components in the VC++ environment, and developing ways to integrate the product with many GL & AP systems.  In addition to maintaining the current systems, the group is re-writing all the products to the Microsoft .NET Platform utilizing the C# programming language.
 
Essential Duties:  
Leadership: Engineers in this position are expected to display good technical and group leadership skills during the course of delivering a project.
This may include leading a small team of one or two more junior engineers, or heading up a particular area of technology which is to be delivered as part of a project.
Engineers in this position are expected to show good leadership abilities, but may require further development or seasoning to become an established leader accepted by all members of the organization, including peers, subordinates, and supervisors.
Engineers in this position are expected to display exemplary people skills when put into positions of technical or small team leadership.
Problem Solving: Engineers in this position are expected to be able to solve problems of considerable technical complexity, as well as frequently being able to solve problems in cases where specifications are inexact or incomplete. Engineers in this position should be able to identify and implement solutions to problems with a minimum amount of management supervision.
They must demonstrate very good analysis, design, and coding skills. They may have some architectural abilities, but may need further experience to synthesize and architect complex software systems independently.
Engineers in this position should also demonstrate good documentation skills, but may need supervision in some cases to produce documentation which meets or exceeds management expectations.
Technical competence: Engineers in this position should demonstrate excellent broad technical competence in the performance of routine day-to-day job functions.
They should be respected while performing these functions by supervisors, subordinates, and peers.
They must have good coding skills, and must demonstrate the capability to independently analyze and design complex software systems.
They should not get "lost in the details" when attempting to solve a difficult problem, and should always able to keep the "big picture" in mind when proposing and implementing a solution.
Supervision: Engineers in this position are expected to be able to perform assigned tasks with a minimum degree of management supervision.
They should work well leading small teams in situations which are generally well-defined and unambiguous. They can lead defined activities reliably, and with a minimum of management intervention.
Initiative: They are expected to be proactive in addressing problems, and in advancing solutions.
Results: Engineers in this position are expected to deliver high quality results in a manner that consistently meets established standards and expectations for the organization.

They should be able to develop and administer schedules for achieving stated goals and objectives with only occasional help or direction from their management or peers.
 
We are currently seeking candidates who meet the following qualifications: 
A B.S., M.S. a plus, in Computer Science (or relate discipline) or equivalent work experience and 5+ years of commercial software development experience.
Must have in-depth knowledge of design, analysis, coding and some relational database work.
Prior experience leading small teams of software engineers is helpful, but not required. 
Position requires 2 - 3 years experience with .NET Application development and Microsoft SQL Server TSQL application development experience on projects.  Experience with Web based applications with the .NET Framework would also be desired but not required.
