Responsibilities:
Job Purpose:
The Mechanical Engineering Manager shall lead the mechanical engineering department in R&D for the Edgewater site. The mechanical engineering department includes the mechanical engineers, the electro-mechanical technicians, and the model shop. The department engages in the design and development of complex medical diagnostic instrumentation in collaboration with a cross functional development team. The ME manager shall be accountable for both the functional management of the department and for a leadership role on development projects. The ME manager shall be responsible for all mechanical engineering development activities, including establishment of requirements, mechanical architecture, design, implementation, and verification for mechanical parts, assemblies, and systems. As manager of the group, this individual shall be responsible for the technical quality and timeliness of the group's output. The manager will insure compliance to the mechanical engineering design process and contribute to the maintenance and enhancement of that process in the pursuit of functional excellence. The ME manager will also need to play a leadership role on development projects. In this role, the person will have responsibility for cross-functional engineering teams and will be accountable for delivering engineering work products on a project schedule.
Job Responsibilities:
Leads and directs the mechanical engineering staff taking full responsibility for the technical quality of the staff's output and the timely completion of the staff's development tasks.
Acts as mechanical engineering technical expert in overseeing the ME activities at the site through design review and hands on problem solving when necessary. This includes setting quality expectations and mentoring staff.
Works with the Bayer Diagnostics Mechanical Engineering Management to support the development of and adherence to functional excellence in mechanical engineering.
Establishes and maintains an understanding of state of the art tools and techniques for mechanical engineering and product development. Responsible for maintaing the tool set for mechanical engineering such as CAD, CAE, FEA, and PDM.
Supervises the mechanical engineering group, which includes:
-human resource management
-preparing and conducting performance reviews
-identifying training and development needs
-Identifying staffing needs and issues
-conducting hiring activities
-assigning personnel to projects and working with project managers to establish appropriate resource allocations
-procure external engineering resources in the form of consultants or temps when necessary
Is a skilled influencer in management decision making and can communicate a technically complex issue in a way that a cross functional business team can act on to make the appropriate decisions for the business.
Has growth potential and interest in advancing to a Director of Engineering role.
Leads a cross functional engineering team on a development project, which includes:
-establishing engineering deliverables for the project.
-creation and maintenance of engineering schedule for project.
-leading team meetings and communicating progress, decisions, and issues through meeting minutes.
-organizing, driving, and coordinating the efforts of a team of engineers.
-working with other leaders on the project to establish interfaces, negotiate resources, and resolve problems.
-delivering results the project needs on the timeline.
-following the PACE development process and contributing to technical reviews
-possessing and promoting skills in decision making, problem analysis, design of experiments, and risk assessment
Skills:
At least 10 + years in mechanical engineering product development with
1. At least 5 years supervising engineering personnel.
2. At least 5 years working in the medical products development or other regulated industry.
A demonstrated record of delivering mechanical designs for products to market.
Knowledge of mechanical CAD, preferably Solidworks.
Knowledge of Finite Element Modelling and application of FEA to solving design problems.
Experience in leading cross-functional engineering teams in development.
Must be a "hands on" engineering manager, who is willing to take the lead on solving the most difficult challenges.
Education & Typical Experience:
Typical education would be a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline with 10+ yrs. experience.
