Sr. Optical Engineer

Job Tasks:   1. Provides recurring and non-recurring product support activity for L-3/Aeromet MWIR and LWIR Optical Systems. This includes MWIR and LWIR FPA calibration and characterization, cryo-cooler performance monitoring, read-out and command and control electronics, health monitoring, and review of mission data products.

2. Develops and reviews test plans and results of flight test, ground test, system characterization and calibration for L-3/Aeromet MWIR and LWIR Optical Systems. Coordinates with cross functional teams including optical, electrical, mechanical, and operations engineers on the test plans.

3. As part of a multi-disciplinary team, establishes optical requirements, verification plans, and performs analysis of LWIR and MWIR systems for optical throughput, and spectral performance over a wide range of environmental conditions associated with Improvement and Modernization activities as well as new system designs.

4. Foster industry-wide awareness of L-3/Aeromet LWIR and MWIR optical systems capabilities by participating in technical conferences and supporting company bid and proposal efforts.

5. Manage Cost, Schedule, and Technical performance of assigned projects.

6. Provide leadership of the Electro-Optical Team. This team provides Aeromet programs with trained, skilled, electro optical engineers and other contributors as required. Employee performance evaluations, professional development, and training are part of this role.

 

Requirements:

 

1. Advanced knowledge of IR detector design, characterization, modeling, packaging, and system level integration.

2. Skilled in use of technical tools such as Zemax, Matlab, MathCAD, etc.

3. Excellent interpersonal skills. Must have exceptional oral and written communication skills and excellent presentation skills.

4. Hands-on electronics skills and electronic test equipment experience.

5. BS (MS preferred) in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering,  Physics or a related technical field.

6. 10 or more years experience with vehicle based hardware programs (mobile ground, flight or space).

U.S. citizen.  Must pass a drug screen test.  Occasional travel required.  Ability to obtain the required security clearance.  Ability to pass an FAA Class III medical, altitude chamber, and egress training.  Occasional airborne test support required.
