Staff Engineer - Electrical Integration

JOB SUMMARY/DESCRIPTION: Electrical Integration (EI) Engineer within the Desktop & Consumer Storage Electrical Integration group. The group is responsible for product engineering of desktop drives, mobile drives, consumer drives (Gaming and DVR applications), and ultra small form factor drives (MP3, PDA applications).
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Electrical Integration (EI) engineer is responsible for developing & implementing Head Gimbal Assembly (HGA) dynamic Electrical Tests (ET) that measure the performance of new recording head designs. Disk drive test data for these heads is analyzed to characterize head performance in relation to the dynamic test results. Using these data, the EI engineer works with the head design team, drive design team, and test engineers to help insure that a manufacturable head design is developed that meets the disk drive requirements for performance and reliability.Responsibilities of an Electrical Head Integration Engineer:(1) Define & Implement a set of dynamic electrical tests (ET) that assess head performance, including Bit Error Rate, writability, head-media spacing, and other recording head performance measures. (2) Statistical modeling of HGA ET and drive performance & reliability data on new head designs. (3) Create a yield & performance improvement plan with input from electrical and mechanical recording head design teams.(4) Data analysis of media, drive configuration, and drive code change impact on the recording subsystem; refinement of HGA ET test and spec requirements due to these changes.(5) Analyze drive and HGA performance and reliability deviations suspected as head related. (6) Partner with Electrical Development Engineering to develop new HGA tests and improve test capability(7) Qualify tester software and hardware changes with the HGA factories to enable new HGA tests.
EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED:
Experience appropriate to the electrical and magnetic design of heads and media.? Detailed understanding of the physics of magnetic recording.? Numerical analysis and data analysis skills are essential.? Electrical head/media testing experience, magnetic modeling expertise, and experience with disk drive read/write and servo channels desired.
EDUCATION:
Ph.D. in magnetic recording (EE or Physics) desired; MSc EE/Physics/MatSci required.
