The Southwest Florida Water Management is a regional governmental authority established by the Florida legislature to manage, regulate, and conserve the water resources within its district boundaries. The District is one of five regional water management districts, which covers an area of approximately 10,000 square miles and includes all or part of sixteen counties.
The mission of the Southwest Florida Water Management District is to manage water and related natural resources to ensure their continued availability while maximizing environmental, economic and recreational benefits. Central to the mission is maintaining the balance between the water need of current and future users while protecting and maintaining water and related natural resources which provide the District with its existing and future water supply. The programs that the District administers include, but are not limited to, flood protection, water use, well construction and environmental resource permitting, water conservation, education, land acquisitions, water resource and supply development and supportive data collection and analysis efforts.
Job Summary:
**The location of this position will be determined upon selection of the successful candidate.
This is advanced and complex scientific and administrative work in support of the Environmental Resource Permitting (ERP) program and other water resource regulation. Work involves projects located throughout the 16-county District area concerning agricultural ground and surface water management (surface water and water use) and with the District's FARMS program. Provides liaison and information to the agriculture community, District staff, USDA-NRCS, other agencies, land owners, consultants, and others; conducts operational consistency review and technical training for staff. Provides oversight and conducts project environmental review of agricultural exemption requests, gives advice to Service Office staff regarding agricultural permitting and enforcement, assists in public communication efforts and performs other administrative duties as needed. Works in concert with the Senior Agricultural Engineer and is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Regulation Performance Management. Frequent travel is required. Participates in District emergency management activities and other departmental activities and performs other duties as needed.
Education and Experience:
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in agricultural science, bio-systems technology, agronomics, environmental science, biology, ecology, zoology, horticulture or other environmental/natural science; and seven years' experience in agricultural and environmental work relating to water management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Possession of a valid driver license is required at date of hire. Additional experience or academic work and/or experience in agricultural surface water management or chemistry are preferred. Current registration as a Certified Wetland Scientist in the State of Florida is preferred.
