Senior Hazmat Technician
SUMMARY: Provide limited leadership to the Hazmat Technicians and support the Leads and Supervisors of the Hazmat Team. Supply virgin chemicals, and provide waste accumulation and technical services for all facilities. Conduct emergency response to spills or release of hazardous materials and hazardous waste at all facilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The duties include the following items:
? Perform emergency spill responses by evaluating the size and type of spill to determine the threat to human health and the environment. Secure the source of the spill, prevent the offsite release of contaminants, provide site security and safety, and conduct cleanup and disposal of spilled materials. Coordinate and interact with Safety, Security and fire department personnel to ensure that the spill response effort is conducted in a fast and efficient manner.
? Provide emergency assistance to emergency situations (i.e. spills, fire, etc) if summoned outside normal scheduled hours.
? Provide educational assistance to maintenance line personnel to ensure that correct work practices are being performed when handling hazardous materials, disposing of hazardous wastes, and using personnel protective equipment. Provide information to leads and supervisors so that appropriate enforcement actions are taken.
? Provide assistance, such as material support, during paint strip and alodine operations as required. Furnish the paint shop with the appropriate type and amount of virgin stripper chemicals and waste collection drums for the type of aircraft involved.
? Transfer materials from Receiving Department to the Chemical Storage Building after insuring all paperwork is correct. Ensure that all materials are stored in correct location according to the chemical hazard class.
? Prepare and fill secondary containers to stock flammable and corrosive cabinets for each maintenance line and shop prior to the beginning of each shift to ensure production is not impacted.
? Check each hangar?s daily use area twice during each shift, remove any full waste drums, replace with empties, and ensure that proper labels are affixed and filled out according to environmental regulations.
? Fill or replace any virgin chemical drums that are empty.
? Conduct daily inspections of all tank and containment sites. Check emergency response carts on hangar floors to ensure they are fully stocked with emergency response materials. Log findings in accordance with federal and state regulations.
? Respond to calls from maintenance lines to provide virgin chemicals and gas cylinders, or pick up unique waste streams as necessary.
? Evaluate waste volumes accumulated and dispose of wastes in a timely manner to maintain regulatory compliance.
? Process accumulated wastes in the Haz-Mat building. Segregate wastes into appropriate waste stream profiles and label drums correctly prior to offsite disposal.
? Check jet fuel emergency response drums on the flight lines. Empty any drums containing jet fuel into jet fuel carts. Compact jet fuel pads into accumulation drums. Empty jet fuel carts that have been filled.
? Proactively support department continuous improvement ?lean? efforts, and supports the overall company lean efforts.

SAFETY RESPONSIBILITY:
Duties shall include observing all company, health, safety and environmental rules, ensuring that you are provided with full information on your area specific safety issues, all unique hazards are identified, and you are provided with the proper equipment to carry out your job in a safe manner. Personal protective equipment is required to be worn during some of the following activities (i.e. spill response, waste processing, etc.) to ensure employee safety. Also, the entire work area must be maintained to a high standard of housekeeping and low incidence of physical hazards and all accidents must be promptly reported to your supervisor or manager.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
? Possess knowledge and math skills necessary to mix various chemical solutions according to proper specifications required by maintenance operations.
? Ability to read and comprehend environmental regulations, detailed instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
? Ability to drive a variety of motorized vehicles and equipment.
? Ability to evaluate site conditions and assess threat to human health and the environment posed by releases of hazardous materials and hazardous wastes.
? Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
? Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in emergency and standardized situations.
? Ability to effectively communicate in writing.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
? High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
? Must hold current certification in Hazardous Waste Operations, Emergency Response, Safety and Health Training in accordance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 and WAC 296-62-3040, and USDOT Hazardous Material Transportation in accordance with 49 CFR 172.704.
? Valid Washington State drivers license.
? Holds: 1) current CPR and First Aid Certification; and 2) current company training and certification in confined space entry, lockout/tagout procedures, forklift operation, and fall awareness.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND DEXTERITY:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools; or controls; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and using equipment, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
The employee must be able to wear respirators and other personal protective equipment for extended periods of time.
Must pass pre-employment physical exam and pass physical exam every two years following entry into job.
Regular medical physicals are required.
ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, or airborne particles. The employee works near moving mechanical parts, in outside weather conditions, and in confined spaces. The noise level in the work area is usually loud.
