Public Information Office Assistant (OPS Position)

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) provides a safe transportation system that ensures the mobility of people and goods, enhances economic prosperity and preserves the quality of our environment and communities.  The employees of FDOT are dedicated to making travel in Florida safer and more efficient. 

The Florida Department of Transportation, District One, serves twelve counties throughout central and southwest Florida.  The Public Information Office (PIO) in District One is responsible for developing, directing and coordinating public information and public relations activities for the district.  The PIO deals directly with media, state and local elected officials, and citizens.

This position is located in Bartow, Florida and reports directly to the Public Information Director of the six most northern counties in District One, which are Polk, Manatee, Sarasota, Hardee, Highlands, and Okeechobee.

 

This position offers competitive pay, but does not provide benefits.  It is a great entry-level opportunity for a person wanting to work up to 40 hours a week in a public relations office for a successful state agency.

 

Duties and ResponsibilitiesPrimary responsibility is to provide the Public Information Office with administrative support.  Administrative support duties include:Answering telephones.Performing a daily news clipping service for executive staff.Purchasing and requisitioning responsibilities.Making training and travel arrangements.Maintaining databases.Conducting mail merge operations.Managing incoming and outgoing mail.Maintaining schedules.Maintaining office files.Handling telephone and e-mail inquiries.Researching inquiries from the public.Assisting with the compilation of reports.Assisting in publishing the District?s newsletter.Other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):Knowledge of correct spelling, punctuation and grammar usage.Knowledge of letter, report and tabular formats.Skill in typing.Ability to use correct spelling, punctuation and grammar.Ability to type letters, memoranda, charts and other standard business forms in correct format.Ability to operate computer with a Windows operating system and Windows Office Suite softwareAbility to learn proprietary and other in-house software programs Ability to proofread typed material for typewritten and grammatical errors and to make necessary corrections.Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.Ability to communicate effectively.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.Ability to research topics, prepare information for dissemination and/or communicate this information to others.Ability to prepare correspondenceAbility to perform  purchasing and reporting functions
