Responsibilities :
Responsible for moderately complex technical work in a wide range of EHS disciplines to achieve compliance with the organization's EHS standards and with federal and state regulatory requirements. Works under very general direction. Independently determines and develops approaches to solution. Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives. Develops, implements and maintains programs, systems and procedures necessary to ensure the overall safety and health of employees and the community. Monitors and works with business groups' management to prevent chemical, physical and biological hazards and diseases that could be present in the work area. Investigates accidents, injuries and complaints concerning hazards or uncomfortable conditions in the workplace. Recommends improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment, to minimize the hazardous potential. Develops and conducts employee training in program specialty areas and other EHS programs. Provides regulatory interpretation and technical advice. Maintains current knowledge of specific requirements imposed by government agencies. May act as a lead person or technical expert and provides direction to less experienced personnel working on EHS programs. Program Specialties include, but are not limited to: EHS Audit/Inspection Program, Accident Investigation, New Process Reviews/HAZOP, Process Safety Management and General Safety Programs such as: Electrical Safety, Fall Protection, Machine Guarding, Forklift, Lock-Out-Tag-Out, Contractor Safety, and Shipping/Receiving/Dock Safety
Skills/Knowledge Requirements:
Possesses a broad knowledge of theories, principles and techniques in a specific field of EHS, plus good working knowledge of related disciplines. Strong general workplace safety background preferred. Applies knowledge to a wide variety of difficult work assignments. Wide use and application of standard principles, theories, concepts and techniques plus working knowledge of related disciplines. Understands impact on budget. Networks, shares knowledge, and keeps up to date with counter parts in the division. Works under very general direction. Determines and develops approach and priority to work. Knowledgeable about domestic EHS regulations and laws. Strong interpersonal and communications skills, and organizational and planning abilities needed to handle multiple tasks concurrently. Excellent computer (spreadsheet and database) skills, experience working with SAP, Access and Lotus Notes databases and webauthoring a plus. M.S. and 3-5 years of experience or B.S. and 5-7 years of experience. Experience with HAZOP techniques a plus. Certified Safety Specialist (CSP) is preferred. Performs tasks from limited instructions and follows established procedures. Assignments given in terms of objectives; Work is reviewed against objectives, for soundness of technical judgment, compliance with regulations and overall adequacy. Makes decisions guided by established policies, procedures. Interprets, executes and may modify policies that affect subordinate organizational units. May act as lead person or technical advisor on small to medium projects. Provide solutions to wide range of difficult problems. Solutions are imaginative, thorough and practical. Problems are of moderate scope and complexity where analysis of situation or data requires review of identifiable factors. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action. Frequently interacts and builds effective relationships with subordinates, customers, and functional peer groups. Interaction normally requires the ability to gain cooperation of others, conducting presentations of technical information concerning specific projects. Represents the company and works with the customer. Produces polished, original correspondence and communication material for internal and external audiences. Demonstrates courage and willingness to make sound decisions in a timely manner. Places difficult issues on table in open manner. Participates in developing and implementing solutions.
Many duties are performed while sitting at a desk or conference room, (e.g., operating a computer, using a telephone, or writing and analyzing data and/or reports, attending meetings). In addition, walking or standing within the office area is required for conducting inspections, drills, participating in agency inspections, conducting EHS audits, assisting and may serve as an incident commander in ERT activities. Preferably able to be respirator certified and be able to wear protective equipment required during emergency response to a chemical spill. May require 5% travel.
