LAB ASSISTANT

Schedule:
INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY Part-time 70 hrs per pay period, day shift 4:30 am-3 pm, Th-Su

Description:

LAB ASSISTANT will process laboratory orders, perform correct procedures/collections with as little discomfort as possible to our patients, and send information, results to our clients within the appropriate time frame. Phlebotomists represent SCMC professionally in appearance and attitude at all times while on duty.

Maintains an in-depth knowledge of principles, practices, standards and techniques and demonstrates knowledge in accordance with SCMC policies and procedures within pertinent laws and regulations in the following areas:

1. Excellent communication skills with patients, co-workers, customers in person or over the phone, using Phone Skill techniques endorsed by the Laboratory.
2. Greet clients/patients who arrive at the laboratory.
3. Collects and enters correct billing information and test information according to procedure.
4. Researches tests and diagnostic codes according to billing and insurance requirements, mainly pertaining to Medicare and other government funded insurance programs, according to Medicare Compliance Act; informs patients in regards to expenses beyond insurance reimbursement, and allows the patient to make decisions as to whether or not to follow through with lab services based on current guidelines, before tests are drawn.
5. Prioritizes requests for inpatient procedures according to urgency of need, type of tests ordered, appropriately.
6. Perform phlebotomy duties and collection procedures according to outlined procedures in the Phlebotomy Manuals.
7. Verifies and distributes specimens to the appropriate testing areas/facilities according to specific handling instructions and within designated time frames
8. Participates in the distribution of results, faxing, phoning, delivery, as designated or requested by clients.

Requirements:
Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. Two years of medical work-related job experience or two years of college science background and one term of medical terminology required. One year of computer work related experience or one year of high school computer training, or equivalent.

Registration/Certification: Phlebotomy certification through an accredited agency is required at time of hire or within five years of hire date.

Experience and Job Knowledge: See education requirements. Must have 1 year experience in phlebotomy and knowledge of the ER.

Computer Literacy: Ability to learn and apply basic computer skills including locating and opening documents, completing forms, opening and sending e-mail messages.
