Laboratory Manager
Celebrating six decades of Making Cancer History, The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is located in Houston on the sprawling campus of the Texas Medical Center. Laboratory Manager (CORE LAB)
The Manager for the Core Lab and Special Chemistry will be responsible for the performance of approximately 3.5 million tests per year, with a staff of ~70 employees. This high volume laboratory utilizes state of the art technology and has implemented Lean Manufacturing Principles.
Ideal candidates must have working knowledge of budget development, strategic planning, regulatory requirements, instrument evaluations and selection, and laboratory computer systems, along with excellent communication skills and recent supervisory experience in a large clinical operation.
Summary:
Function: Provides leadership by planning, directing, coordinating, communicating all activities within a major section of the clinical laboratory.
Scope: Responsible for day-to-day laboratory operations of the assigned section including laboratory work performed in the section. Supervises and advises personnel on purchasing, space utilization, continuing education and time management.
Essential Job Functions:
' Demonstrates the job knowledge and proficiency to monitor, evaluate and improve the quality, efficiency and appropriateness of testing, personnel practices, continuing education and regulatory compliance issues.
' Assesses budgetary activities and develops productivity levels sufficient to meet time constraints established for procedures. Develops, monitors and adheres to financial plans focusing on cost benefits.
' Administers, implements, coordinates and develops human and material resources into dynamic organizational teams to achieve productivity goals and objectives of the Division and Section.
' Safety compliance is reflected in all work practices, remaining compliant to all health, safety and infection control requirements.
Supervision:
Received: General supervision from Division Head, Division Administrator and Section Head.
Given: General and technical supervision of all personnel assigned to the section.
Education:
Required: Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or related science.
Preferred: Master's degree in Health Care Management or related fields.
Experience:
Required: Seven years experience in a clinical laboratory as a Medical Technologist (Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Cytogenetics, HLA, Immunology, Microbiology or Data Processing), including two years in a supervisory capacity.
Licensure/Certification/Registration:
Required: One of the following:
' Certified Medical Technologist (MT) by American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
' Certified Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by National Certifying Agency (NCA).
' Certified Cytogenetics Technologist (CT) by National Certifying Agency )NCA).
' HLA Certified Histocompatiability Technologist (CHT) by American Society for Histocompatability and Immunogenetics (ASHI).
