Lead Blood Bank Technologist

Position Description: Bachelor’s degree or successful completion of an accredited four-year school of Medical Technology. ASCP certification as an MT is required. SBB preferred. Must be willing to work all shifts, as needed. Five years of related experience with demonstrated leadership skills.

Coordinates the work of others as assigned in a medical laboratory section. Works with considerable independence to perform and interpret tests. Is expert in the use of all equipment and procedures for an assigned area.
Distributes and monitors the flow of work for an assigned group of employees. Provides training and technical assistance to employees within the assigned work area. Assists supervisor or manager in assuring that assigned employees are provided with appropriate resources, materials, and methods. Provides recommendations to manager or supervisor for the most efficient utilization of assigned personnel. Relays work instruction from the supervisor or manager.

Interviews prospective candidates for positions in the laboratory and makes recommendation to Manager.

Evaluates new hires performance and conducts performance reviews on employees assigned.

Schedules employees for various lab benches and shifts; reviews all work performed in area to ensure completeness and quality and takes corrective action as necessary.

Discusses performance issues with employees and recommends disciplinary action to Manager.

Follows established protocols to perform all kinds of tests, including the most complex for an assigned area. Provides guidance and consultation to Medical Technologist I?s and Medical Lab. Technicians in the interpretation of highly complex or unusual test results.

Troubleshoots testing process discrepancies.

Develops new test and quality procedures for assigned area.

Ensures that test results meet requirements of the laboratory quality control program.

Ensures preventative maintenance for equipment in assigned area. Performs complex troubleshooting, repair, and modification of a wide range of complex equipment and instrumentation.

Ensures compliance with all laboratory quality and safety policies.

Instructs students in clinical laboratory operations and procedures.

Maintains accurate records of tests performed, using computer-based systems.
