Physician Assistant - Transfusion Medicine

The Physician Assistant for Transfusion Medicine will be an integral member of the Joint Program in Transfusion Medicine clinical care team. Working closely with the Transfusion Medicine attending physicians and nurses, the PA will oversee the care of outpatients requiring either therapeutic apheresis procedures or peripheral blood stem cell collections. Work will be performed at both the BWH Blood Donor Center and the DFCI Kraft Family Blood Donor Center.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.

1. Clinical Duties:
a. In collaboration with the Transfusion Medicine attending physicians, house officers and apheresis nurses, the PA will oversee the medical care of outpatients undergoing therapeutic apheresis procedures at the BWH Blood Donor Center. These procedures, which are performed by apheresis nurses, include photopheresis, plasma exchange and red blood cell exchange.
b. The PA will also oversee the medical care of both patients and healthy donors undergoing peripheral blood stem collections at the DFCI Kraft Family Blood Donor Center.
c. Specific duties: under the supervision of a Transfusion Medicine attending physician, the PA will:
' Perform focused history and physical examinations on patients and healthy donors undergoing apheresis.
' Review and evaluating apheresis patient laboratory data.
' Write orders for apheresis procedures.
' Manage various issues that may arise during apheresis (patient symptoms, central line access problems, etc).

2. General Duties:
a. Works collaboratively and functions as an effective member of the health care team.
b. Provides education to patients and families.
c. Documents in the medical record as appropriate and communicates observations/findings with attending physicians.
d. Monitors environment of care and complies with regulatory agency standards e.g. FACT.
e. Clinical practice is consistent with physician assistant policies, procedures and standards.
f. Participates in QA/QI projects as appropriate.

1. Graduate of AAPA/NCCPA accredited Physician Assistant Studies Program.
2. Holds NCCPA Board certification.
3. Licensure as a Physician Assistant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
4. Complete 100 hours of continuing medical education according to national and state regulations during each 2-year period of employment.
