Software Engineer

Summary:
Programmer for software development aspects of World Wide Web (WWW) based clinical research database for the Department of Survey, Center for Surgery and Public Health.
' Designs distributed WWW-based applications, incorporating user interface design, relational database design, and application programming.
' Ensures successful integration of all code, interface elements, and database structures. Writes technical, process and user documentation for integrated applications.
' Share responsibility for the organization, maintenance and management of a very large SQL database of clinically generated data elements to be used for quality reporting, process improvement and outcomes and clinical research.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Key designer and developer of web-based software applications and tools. Works closely with PHS IS, other software engineers and users throughout the development lifecycle.

2. Working in collaboration with the surgeons/staff to function as the lead SQL/Web database developer, which includes planning, designing, developing, implementing and administrating the Center for Surgery and Public Health SQL Server database, the front-end Web-based user interface, and reporting for multiple-database layout, emphasizing technical integration within Partners' environment.

3. Coordinate testing and implementation with other project team members. Monitor completion of tasks, and manage integration of sub-systems into the complete software system.

4. Database performance monitoring, technical support and trouble-shooting of database applications. Interacting in a cooperative and diplomatic manner to ensure that database applications are satisfactory.

5. Evaluation of tools/products related to database administration.

6. Problem analysis and recovery.

7. Performing queries and statistics as requested for the surgeons/staff's research projects.



Qualifications:
' 5+ years programming experience in a business, healthcare or academic setting
' Proven ability to design, develop and deploy institutional web site capabilities
' Solid knowledge of HTTP, HTML, CGI, scripting and other WWW related standards and activities such as JavaScript, XML, SAP, or Cold fusion
' Solid understanding of client-server database application development in the WWW setting
' Experience with SQL and ODBC database application development
' Solid knowledge of Windows operating environment
' B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent education or experience
' Strong familiarity with the Internet and available Internet resources

' Ability t learn development tools and utilities rapidly and independently
' Solid communication and documentation skills
' Experience with large databases required
