Unit Clerk
Job Purpose:
Supports patient care unit operations by maintaining the nursing station; gathering and providing information to professional staff, patients, and their families; providing clerical services.
Duties:
* Provides patient record services on patient care unit by stamping, assembling, completing, and processing patient charts; transcribing doctors' orders; keeping records identified and available to health care providers; replacing non-permanent reports when permanent reports are obtained; checking charts for incomplete histories and operative summaries; bringing issues to health care team members for correction.
* Provides information by using the telephone, intercom, and intranet; answering questions for health care team, patients, visitors, and family members; transmitting patient classification information to department of nursing; obtaining laboratory and radiology reports; notifying doctors of results.
* Ensures patient daily services by completing service requisitions.
* Keeps pharmacy up-to-date on patient location by notifying pharmacist of change-of-bed status on patient admission, discharge, and transfer.
* Maintains unit inventory of stock and tracks equipment repairs by preparing requisitions; receiving, sorting, and distributing supplies delivered to the unit; preparing equipment repair requisitions; maintaining equipment repair log.
* Generate revenues by charging exchange cart items.
* Provides ancillary services to patients by completing requests for non-medical services, such as tv and video rentals, personal beauty and grooming appointments.
* Provides payroll information to nursing department by transmitting nursing work schedules and time worked.
* Provides a productive patient unit atmosphere by maintaining an orderly nursing station.
* Maintains quality results by following and enforcing patient care unit standards.
* Protects facility's reputation by keeping patient information confidential.
* Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications.
* Serves and protects the facility community by adhering to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and jcaho standards.
* Accomplishes departmental/organizational objectives by establishing standards and procedures; measuring results against plans and standards; evaluating and improving methods; making required changes.
