Ophthalmic Technician

Job Summary: Provide technical ophthalmic and administrative assistance to the medical staff of the service assigned.  The service specialist is the central point for coordinating patient care/patient flow.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Perform all necessary tests and patient workup in order for the medical staff to diagnose a patient problem.  Assist with special procedures and minor surgery:Patient HistoryVisual AcuityMotilityRetinoscopy/RefractometryVision Field testingTonometryPupilsColor Vision

 

2. Develop and implement service specific operational protocols which promote service efficiency and team work with other services. 

 

3. Provide direct patient care on assigned service.  Participate in patient care on other services when assigned service not in session. 

EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE, TRAINING (Include Licenses and Professional Activities):

1.  Education

High school degree or GED required.

Non-Certified accepted with eligibiliy to take COA exam within six months of hire, COA and COT's preferred with certification required within one year of employment.

 

2.  Experience

Minimum 3 years work experience as an ophthalmic assistant.  Prior experience in back office coordination helpful. 

 

3.  Abilities and Characteristics

Knowledge of medical terminology.

Ability to effectively communicate in a verbal and written manner.

Ability to interpret policies and procedures and to apply standards consistently.

Possess interpersonal skills which support and maintain professional relationships with members of the health care team.
