Blood Collection Technician

The American Red Cross is one of our nation?s largest blood providers and stands as an innovator and leader in transfusion medicine and blood banking research. From the first civilian organized blood program in 1948 to today?s state-of-the-art blood services, the American Red Cross has been providing patients with the safest possible blood and blood products.

 

The Arizona Region of American Red Cross Blood Services is the sole provider of blood and blood products for 18 hospitals in 6 counties in Arizona. We recruit and collect whole blood from volunteer donors throughout the state.

 

Job Description: We are seeking blood collection staff to perform all job tasks needed to process volunteer blood donors such as conducting medical histories, performing venipunctures, etc. Staff members are assigned to blood drives sponsored by companies, churches, schools, etc. throughout the state. Depending on the hours of the blood drives and travel time, staff may start as early as 4:30 in the morning and may return from some drives as late as midnight. All employees take turns driving ARC vans to transport staff to blood drives.

 

Hours: Assigned schedule of days and hours worked changes each week.  Generally a weekly schedule is available a week in advance. Position requires availability for daytime, evening and weekend hours and ability to occasionally travel out of town and stay overnight. Hours can start as early as 4:30 a.m. and end as late as midnight. The Region operates 7 days a week and staff can expect to work most week ends.

 

Qualifications: High school degree or equivalent, customer service experience and computer aptitude required. Experience as phlebotomist, medical assistant, nursing assistant, EMT, LPN or RN preferred. Must be able to work a varied schedule including daytime, evening and weekend hours as well as travel outside the city and on occasion be away from home overnight. Intensive 12-week training program (3 weeks of training in Tucson) requires full-time attendance. Must be able to read and follow operating procedures and work in highly regulated, structured environment as a team player. Legible handwriting is required. Current valid Arizona driver?s license and good driving record needed.  Must be able to lift, move, push, pull heavy boxes, equipment, etc. to help set up for blood drives.

 

Benefits: Medical and dental premiums are paid for the employee only. The American Red Cross contributes a percentage to dependent coverage. We offer a 401k and match dollar for dollar, up to the first 4% of pay contributed by employee.  Employees are also enrolled in the ARC retirement system after one year of employment. Full-time employees receive life and long-term disability insurance and are eligible for paid vacation and sick leave.
