Medical Interpreter/Translator

Job Details: JOB SUMMARY: Translators provide both written translation and verbal interpretation from English to Spanish and Spanish to English for patients, families and health care providers. Translators also assist health care providers who provide instruction and home care skills to Spanish speaking families. They communicate with Spanish speaking families to ensure the patient and/or family understands the health information provided to them. Translators advise members of the healthcare team regarding Hispanic cultural issues related to health care and obtain the services of translators for other languages through approved processes. Translators modify their approach to families based on developmental levels of the caregiver and the patient.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma, GED, or Foreign equivalent. High school diploma, GED, or Foreign equivalent.

Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience plus one year previous translation experience, preferably in a health care organization.

Fluent in English and Spanish, both written and verbal.

Demonstrated ability to translate English/Spanish, both written and verbal, including medical terminology and according to established standards

Demonstrated understanding of cultural issues related to health care.

Ability to function independently, assume initiative and make decisions requiring evaluation of complex issues/circumstances.

Ability to manage multiple simultaneous demands and to prioritize effectively.

Ability to relate diplomatically to a variety of customers including hospital staff, patients and families, community agencies and contractors.

Ability to function effectively in a multidisciplinary team using a collaborative communication style.

Ability to provide translation/interpretation in an age and developmentally appropriate manner.

Ability to meet the scheduling needs of the department and assigned services; evening and weekend shifts may be required.
