RN Supervisor/Nursing Manager

  The Nursing Supervisor assumes the responsibility for the supervision of all nursing units of this facility. The major areas of responsibility are: management of nursing care, nursing supervision and coordination of services. The nursing supervisor is interested in assisting all nursing personnel to successfully perform their responsibilities.



II. ESSENTIAL DUTIES:



1. Responsible for the overall quality of nursing practices and nursing care administered on the units of assignment.



2. Assists the staff in planning for resident care in keeping with the philosophy and the standards established for the department.



3. Assists team leader and Nurse Manager in developing and implementing nursing care plans for individual residents.



4. Analyzes the quality of care and ascertains need for additional or modified nursing care.



5. Gives a thorough and accurate report to the relieving supervisor at change of shift informing him/her of all pertinent information to successfully carry out his/her duties.



6. Investigate resident and employee incidents/accidents timely, accurately and thoroughly and complete forms as per policy.



7. Has a thorough knowledge of Infection Control policy and procedure and monitors compliance on the nursing units.



8. Coordinates the efforts of the health team in planning care and in carrying out the plan of care.



9. Gives direct nursing care to residents when it is deemed advisable.



10. Assists in the interpretation of policy and procedure for the facility, for residents, for families and visitors.

11. Assists residents and relatives in understanding the plan of care and supports them in stressful situations.



12. Utilizes available resources. Stimulates family awareness of community resources and encourages their effective utilization in family rehabilitation.



13. Oversees the implementation of physician?s orders. Communicates with medical staff in reporting resident needs and progress as necessary. Screen and coordinate calls to physicians.



14. Assists in developing a staffing pattern to meet needs of residents. Makes daily staffing adjustments.



15. Assists in formulating policies and procedures relative to nursing care and practices. Interprets and implements policies and procedures. Interprets individual resident needs for other services.



16. Objectively evaluates performance of nursing staff. Completes appraisals of staff nurses as indicated by shift responsibility and reviews performance appraisals of Nursing Assistants.



17. Participates in the continuous learning experiences for nursing personnel. Attends unit conferences to contribute to the learning experience of staff. Cooperates with the In-service Education Department in encouraging the personal growth of the staff. Assists as necessary in orientation and in-service education. May serve as a resource person for nursing students or other educational programs.



18. Guides, counsels and motivates nursing personnel. Implements disciplinary measures when necessary.



19. Applies the Attendance Control Policy appropriately by counseling and disciplining staff relative to the absence record, as warranted.



20. Recognizes personal and professional abilities and recommends personnel for promotion.



21. Assists in coordinating the activities of the nursing department with those of other departments. Interprets nursing policy and procedure to nursing staff and other personnel.



22. Recommends purchase of materials and equipment for the improvement or resident care.




Assists Nurse Managers and Team Leaders in developing effective communications with their respective staff.




Assures through management, education, guidance and participation that care administered to residents is supervised. Participates through progress note review, progress note documentation, and change in condition review and documentation to assure residents? needs are met timely and reported to medical services where applicable






Assures appropriate management of any skin issues through implementation of appropriate policy & procedures and monitoring of staff?s assigned responsibilities.





 


Is aware of the Resident Abuse Law and his/her responsibility related to such.





II. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (continued)



27. Completes resident census daily and forwards to Medical Records as per policy.




Monitors Quality Assurrance efforts by completing audits as directed and reviewing results with staff.






Promotes a positive image of long term & rehab care nursing.






Accepts and records all narcotic deliveries and monitors usage of emergency drugs from boxes.






Receives and coordinates disbursement of lab reports.






Makes referrals to Employee Health Nurse and EAP Coordinator.






Works with safety in mind at all times:



a. Assure that established infection control and standard precautions practices are maintained when performing duties.

b. Report all hazardous conditions or equipment to supervisor.

c. Follow established fire safety policies and procedures.

d. Assures that assigned work areas are maintained in a clear, safe, comfortable and attractive manner.

e. Keep work/assignment areas free of hazardous objects such as: protruding mop/broom handles, unnecessary equipment, supplies, etc.



33. Maintain confidentiality of resident information. Honor the resident?s personal and property rights.



34. Attends all mandatory in-services as required. Attend and participate in in-service education classes, on-the-job training programs etc., as scheduled or directed.



III. OTHER RELATED DUTIES:



1. Participate and assist in departmental studies and projects as directed.



2. Changes oxygen tanks as necessary in the absence of Maintenance or Central Service Technician.




Assists in: administering PPD tests to employees for annual health assessment as necessary.






Participates and assists in inspection by regulatory agencies.






WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposed to blood and body fluids through direct personal resident care (Category II exposure). Works in well lighted/ventilated areas. Subject to frequent interruptions. Involved with residents/patients, family members, visitors, government agencies/ personnel, etc. under all conditions and circumstances. Subject to hostile and emotionally upset patients, family members, etc. Communicates with the medical staff, nursing personnel, and other departments. Willingness to work beyond normal working hours, in other positions tempo-rarily, when needed. Subject to falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc. throughout the work day.





V. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Licensed, currently registered in N.Y.S. as a Regis-tered Nurse. Graduate of an accredited educational program for Registered Nurses, or complet-ed the required portion of a Registered Nurse educational program to be considered equivalent.



VI. QUALIFICATIONS: Must be able to exercise initiative and judgment and be able to discern when medical judgment is required. Must possess the ability to: understand the legal implications and scope of nursing practice, relate to and work with ill, disabled elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people within the facility, follow written and oral instructions; make independent decisions; accept direction and corrective comments; deal tactfully and work harmoniously with personnel, resident?s, family members, and visitors; seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing practices; function independently, be flexible, demonstrate personal integrity and high ethical standards.



VII. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires a considerable amount of standing, walk-ing, bending, stretching, lifting of residents and equipment, carrying of supplies, moving inter-mittently during working hours. Must be able to read, write and speak the English language.
