Under general supervision, but following established policies and procedures, the Senior Research Assistant performs scientific investigative research in areas related to patient care.  Researches literature in the field, participates in the design of experimental protocols and develops new procedures to carry out established research objectives.  Conducts experiments using in vitro and or in vivo techniques; collects and analyzes data using statistical methodology.  May assist in writing presentations and papers for publication based on the research performed.

 

This project studies the hormonal regulation of adipocyte differentiation in order to better understand adipocyte development and the physiology of excess adipose tissue. Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) plays a key role in growth and development, including the growth of adipocyte precursor cells and the differentiation of those precursor cells into adipocytes. We are investigating novel signal transduction pathways used by IGF-I to mediate growth and differentiation of adipocytes, using two in vitro models: the murine 3T3-L1 cell line and primary cultures of human preadipocytes. We use a combination of approaches including immunoprecipitations and Western blotting, analysis of gene expression by RT-PCR, and specific knock-down of crucial proteins using RNA interference and dominant-negative expression.
