POSITION PURPOSE:
Under the general direction of the manager, the sonographer performs complex diagnostic ultrasound procedures of the cardiovascular system for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cardiovascular disease in accordance with industry, Federal, State, and JCAHO, ICAVL/ICAEL requirements. The sonographer participates in the implementation of Cardiovascular Sonographer Care Standards and physician orders to achieve the goal of effective utilization of services and improved patient outcomes. In conjunction with leadership, this position is responsible for recommending the delivery of patient care through proper execution of care standards, physician orders, and advanced imaging skills.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
This position is accountable and responsible for the performance of echocardiographic/vascular ultrasound examinations. The sonographer is required to function as a role model, professional resource, and coach for the CV Ultrasound staff, physicians, and ancillary departments. This position is expected to integrate the imaging needs of the patient with other care providers to achieve desired results. The sonographer is responsible for keeping current on technological advances within cardiovascular imaging and is well versed in appropriate clinical area. The Sonographer will cooperate and actively participate in the accreditation application (ICAVL/ICAEL) and re-application process. This position demonstrates anatomic and physiological data through proper patient positioning and equipment selection. The technologist reviews images for identification, technique, and completeness according to the American Society of Echocardiography, Society for Vascular Ultrasound, Inter- Societal Commission on Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories, the Inter-Societal Commission on Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories, and laboratory policy and procedure. Participates in educational sessions, contributing technical and professional knowledge to; students, allied health personnel, and physicians. Evaluates new instrumentation and equipment, related to cardiovascular sonography. The Sonographer is required to perform ultrasonic exams on the heart, great vessels, and other cardiovascular structures in all areas of the medical center including, but not limited to, the department, at the bedside, Emergency Room, and the Operating Room. The Sonographer will use appropriate technique for intervenous line insertion and ultrasound contrast media administration when the use of contrast is required. The Sonographer will acquire the necessary skills to perform new ultrasonic examinations as they are added to the department product line. The sonographer will be required to actively cross-train to echocardiography/vascular and acquire the skills necessary to work autonomously in both areas. The position greets patients, physicians, peers, and the general public in a manner consistent with the Purpose Statement, Values, and Standards of Conduct of Washoe Health System. The technologist is challenged to operate a variety of sophisticated ultrasonic imaging units and reading center devices. The incumbent must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, motor/sensory, psychosocial, and safety appropriate to patients ranging in age from newborn to geriatric, and meets standards of quality as measure by the unit/department age specific competency standards.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Associate Degree in Cardiovascular Technology or Applied Sciences or Bachelor?s Degree or equivalent education and experience required. Bachelor?s Degree preferred. Requires the ability to read, write, and speak English.
Experience: 1 year of cardiovascular experience required.
Registration: Technologist must hold active registry or be in the process of obtaining (must be completed within 120 days of hire date) with either Cardiovascular Credentialing International (offering CCT, RCIS, RCS or RVS) or American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (offering RVT or RDCS) in the specialty of adult or pediatric echocardiography and or vascular technology. Individual holding both RDCS/RCS and RVT is both encouraged and preferred. American Heart Association CPR certification for health care providers is required within 60 days of employment.
