Through the AmeriCorps Independence Project, you can help individuals with mental disabilities live with more confidence and independence. You may choose to help others through a variety
of placements?from helping in special education classes to
engaging adults in training, shopping, or community activities. You need not have experience?we will provide training and staff supervision.
All participants must commit to serve for 11 months. During that time you will be paid $990 or $524 per month. After completing your 11 months of service you will receive a $4,725 or $2,362 award to help pay for your education. Service Coordination Assistant. FT
Duties: Assist social workers with transportation of clients to grocery store, doctor, home visits, and social activities. Work with social workers to care for and meet the needs of clients. One position will split time with Supported Employment Assistant Tyler,Canton,Mineola,Athens 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.M-F
Trinity Mother Frances Respite Care Provider PT
Duties: Recruit and assist volunteers to provide childcare on Saturdays for special needs children. Position will split with Andrews Angels for part time placement. Tyler--9:00 a.m. 4:30
Special Education School Assistant. FT/PT
Duties: Assist teachers with special needs students in the classroom, teaching life skills, academic skills, or music. Choice of serving at Chapel Hill ISD, St. Louis School, or Robert E. Lee HS. Some Chapel Hill Assistants will split hours with Developmental Childcare Assistant for full time placement. Tyler 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. M-F
Developmental Childcare Assistant. FT/PT
Duties: Assist staff with field trips, reading, music, arts and crafts for children with disabilities. Full time placement will split hours with Chapel Hill Assistant--Tyler 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.M-F
Supported Employment Assistant FT
Duties: Assist persons to obtain and maintain employment, fill out job applications, job site training, transportation to and from work at times. Position will split time with Service Coordination Assistant--Tyler 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
Goodwill OIT/ADI Client Development Trainer. FT/PT
Duties: Assist staff with adults in pre-vocational and vocational training in a sheltered workshop. Tyler 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Therapeutic Horseback Riding Assistant FT
Duties: Assist instructor to implement therapy plans, maintain arena environment, mount and dismount students. Full Time placement will split time with Developmental Childcare Assistant or Special Education School Assistant Tyler 6:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. M-Th
Communication Specialist PT
Duties: Speak at presentations to recruit and later train volunteers for Andrews Angels program. Also serve as Client Advocate in Outpatient Clinic to assist clients in accessing mental health services. Tyler 8:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. M-F
Residential Facility Assistant PT
Duties: Assist and train adults and teenagers with mental retardation in daily life skills, such as cooking, laundry, and outside activities within a small home setting. Some positions will be combined with Parent Support Group Specialist. Tyler 4:00 p.m-10:00 p.m. M-F, 11 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Saturdays
Parent Support Group Specialist. PT
Duties: Assist in support meetings parents of children with mental disorders. Will also assist in training activities with children. Position will split with Residental Facility Assistant Tyler 3:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.M-F
Jail Diversion Assistant FT
Duties: Arrange community services for mentally ill or retarded offenders. Tyler 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.M-F
PATH Consumer Volunteer Recruiter PT
Duties: Recruit, train and supervise individuals with mental disabilities to serve as PATH volunteers.Tyler 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.M-F
