Behavioral Specialist
San Gabriel Children's Center (SGCC) Inc., has an opening for a Behavioral Specialist. SGCC is a Non-Profit Corporation serving Southern California with a capacity of 42 resident boys between the ages of 7 and 17 with level-14 group homes. SGCC provides residential care and structured therapeutic support to resident boys.
To qualify for this position, an individual must:
a) Possess an earned baccalaureate degree in a behavioral science field or the educational equivalent of an AA degree and at least six years of work experience in a mental health treatment setting or in a school setting working with SED children or adolescents.
b) Possess experience in leading or co-leading groups with adults and/or children.
c) Possess knowledge of therapeutic concepts, skills, and interventions sufficient to help implement and sustain an effective therapeutic milieu.
d) Demonstrate the ability to interact professionally with other disciplines and program staff.
e) Demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
f) Demonstrate knowledge of crisis management concepts and practices and apply and exercise such knowledge and skills as necessary.
g) Demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain appropriate rapport with child and youth clients and their families/caregivers and personal representatives.
h) Maintain a valid driver?s license and provide proof of insurance if transporting clients/families.
i) Obtain, within 30 days of employment, Red Cross CPR, Professional Assault Response Training-R (?PART?), and First Aid Certification and maintain such certification current through the term of employment with SGCC. Staff may also be required to obtain and maintain Water Safety Certification depending on program needs.
Expectations: a)Demonstrate an understanding of non-punitive conflict resolution and crisis assessment/management, and consistent compliance with, the SGCC Emergency Intervention Plan.
b)Demonstrate and model the qualities of professionalism, timeliness, integrity, honesty, and dependability.
c) Demonstrate effective communication as manifested in frequent, regular contact with clients?
therapists, family members, community agency representatives, and educational and residential
service providers.
d) Follow-through in implementing behavioral plans, using team meetings and supervisory consultation to recommend modifications to existing plans and exercising appropriate initiative to promote and assure client safety and flexible adherence to plans as circumstances dictate.
e) Demonstrate clear and effective writing skills, attention to detail, and compliance with all applicable documentation requirements.
f) Demonstrate ability to lead or co-lead educationals or activity groups on an on-going daily basis.
Responsibilities:
The Behavior Specialist Counselor works directly with children, providing normalizing, supportive interactions and activities that are consistent with the maintenance of a therapeutic Behavior Specialist including:
a) Providing services in accordance with the child?s weekly schedule of therapeutic, skill-development, and adjunctive activities set forth in the Child?s treatment plan and operationalized by the treatment team and responsible clinician.
b)Assisting in development and refinement implementation of individualized treatment and service plans.
c) Documents in an accurate and timely fashion all services that are reimbursable through EPSDT funding.
d) Proactively ensuring that any type of intervention utilized is in accordance with the agency?s Day Services/TBS policies and treatment philosophy that seeks to create a supportive, nurturing, and appropriately challenging interpersonal environment.
e) Working within scope of practice.
f) Working directly with children, engaging in such activities as coaching, modeling, limit-setting, and reinforcing constructive interactions
g) Performing appropriate routines and presenting and overseeing the clients? performance of a wide variety of developmentally appropriate tasks and activities of daily living.
h) Operating vehicles to transport children for activity, complies with all safety standards, laws, and agency policies when operating a vehicle.
i)Working directly with children by leading and/or co-leading daily educational or activity groups
around a variety of different topics.
j) Attending all scheduled supervision and treatment team meetings to develop, review, and implement
Treatment and Service Plans and observes and identifies milestones and obstacles. Monitors all
aspects of the child?s program including privileges, recognition, safety limitation, discipline and
treatment philosophy, and reviews these with the appropriate team for medical and service
necessity.
k)Participating in organizational training activities and demonstrating a commitment to continuous learning and the Agency mission statement.
l) Participating in staff meetings and demonstrating in a proactive manner a commitment to enhance the effectiveness of the programl
m) Assuming other tasks as assigned by the supervisor or Head of Service.
n) Responding to crisis situations as outlined in the Agency?s Emergency Intervention Protocol.
