Test Counselor

Summary:  Provide HIV counseling and testing to the Latino/a immigrant community, within Open Door Medical Center facilities and on a Mobile Testing Unit, as per New York State regulations, offering necessary referrals.  Administer Orasure and Oraquick testing.

 QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Bachelors Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or related field or three years related experience.  Must be certified by NY States as a Test Counselor, Must be bilingual  (Spanish), bicultural preferred

 

Experience:

 

Must possess experience in the areas of HIV prevention, counseling skills, knowledge of Westchester County and service providers.  Excellent verbal and written communication.  Computer literate.  Preferred understanding of immigration issues, familiarity with motivational interviewing and behavior change theory.  Experience or desire to work with disenfranchised, low income populations.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

?   Providing HIV counseling and testing services, in compliance with NYS Public Health Law Article 27F, as amended by NYS?s HIV Reporting and Partner Notification Public Health Law, Article 21, Title 3.

?  Implementing behavior change counseling interventions.

?  Administering Orasure and Oraquick (rapid) HIV testing.

?  Maintenance of counseling records and other data collection forms as required by program.

?  Distribution of incentives

?  Financial record keeping as required by program.

?  Maintenance of an updated resource directory for referrals to service providers, including information regarding accessing such services.

?  Assessing participants for service needs.

?  Providing some case management services, including referrals and follow up.

?  Conduct HIV presentations and small group activities in the targeted communities.

?  Attend local network meetings, as determined by supervisor.

?  Work with Peer Outreach Coordinator to track participants for post-tests and follow up testing.

?  Maintain participant confidentiality at all times as per Open Door policies and procedures.

?  Represent Open Door to community members, other service providers and program participants.

?  Participate in clinical supervision on a weekly basis.

?  Attend staff meetings as determined by supervisor.

?  Other duties, as assigned by supervisor.
