Respiratory Specialist

Becoming a Respiratory Specialist in the United States Army requires an enlistment in either the Army (full-time) or Army Reserve (part-time). For a full-time enlistment, applicants must already possess civilian skills qualifying them for the Army Civilian Acquired Skills Program (ACASP). Prior to your first duty assignment you will be required to complete 9 weeks of Basic Combat Training (BCT), immediately followed by Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at one of the Army's training locations. The location listed reflects only the location of your AIT. Your permanent duty location will be determined by the needs of the Army. During AIT you will learn specific skills required to perform your day-to-day mission. Some of your duties will include, but are not limited to, assisting with the management of a respiratory unit or administering respiratory therapy and performing pulmonary function tests under the supervision of a physician or nurse anesthetist. To qualify for this position you must be a prior graduate from an accredited program or a program holding a Letter of Review from the Joint Review Committee for Respiratory Therapy education, or be certified as a Respiratory Therapist by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
