Senior Subsea Development Engineer

Location:
Houston, TX

Relocation Options:
Relocation will be in accordance with current BP guidelines.

The Sakhalin Developments Performance Unit is an entirely new organization charged with building a significant business based on existing and future opportunities located offshore Sakhalin Island (Sak 4 and 5).

The first Arctic development offshore Sakhalin is currently in the early Appraise stage, and the team is beginning to identify the full range of potential development concepts. Concepts are being considered for both an Early Oil Scheme (EOS) and a Full Field Development.  Since the Full Field Development will likely include multiple fields, hub concepts are also being explored.

The Engineering Program Manager for this project is seeking a Senior Subsea Development Engineer to play a key role in developing the full range of subsea engineering concepts and subsequently identifying and conducting the activities and work scope required to successfully complete the Appraise and Select stages.  This person will define and evaluate EOS and Full Field concepts and options and will lead and/or support various aspects of BP's global Arctic technology program.

This is an excellent opportunity offering exposure to the full range of Appraise and Select stage activities, cold region technology, and remoteness challenges.  Sakhalin has a wide range of temperatures (+40◦C to -40◦C) and is located in an active seismic area.  Water depths range from more than 100 to 300 meters.

Accountabilities Include:

Developing a subsea production system, functional specifications, and layouts in Arctic Cold Regions (ACR).
Developing flowline system routing configurations and outline specifications in areas of high sea bottom currents, active seismic faults, and possible gouging of the seabed by ice ridges.
Developing reliability and qualification plans.
Appraising subsea umbilical risers and flowlines, high integrity pipeline protection systems and other options.
Conducting feasibility studies including tie-ins and tie-backs.
Developing plans for installation task methodologies, vessel requirements, and estimation of task durations with the knowledge of short weather windows.
Appraising novel technologies (including subsea boosting and electric flowline heating) and determining the benefits, risks and estimated cost of adopting such innovations.
Benchmarking cost estimates to support the project cost/schedule engineer.
Evaluating system operability, flow assurance constraints and intervention during short weather windows.
Evaluating system integrity issues including material selection and corrosion/erosion mitigation measures especially in ACR and active seismic areas.
Providing requirements for engineering data collection for proper design of the systems.
Supporting the delivery of the Capital Value Process Appraise to Select stage gate and Health, Safety and Environmental requirements.
Developing and maintaining knowledge of BP, competitor and contractor best practices, including technical and Russian content opportunities.
Ensuring Russian codes and standards, approval process, and permitting are met.
Interfacing with other project team disciplines including flow assurance, subsea, marine, reservoir, planning, cost estimating, commercial, substructure and seismic.
Working with technical specialists in BP's Exploration and Production Technology Group, external engineering contractors, process equipment vendors, and the supply chain management team.
Working with partners, competitors, contractors and the Russian Technical Institute.

Required Qualifications:
To be considered for the role of Senior Subsea Development Engineer applicants must have:

Legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than your current employer.
A minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in chemical or mechanical engineering or other relevant engineering discipline.
Experience with subsea engineering.
Willingness and ability to travel to Russia up to 10% of the time to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.

Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the required qualifications the successful candidate is likely to be able to demonstrate:

A minimum of 10 years of experience in upstream offshore engineering with the majority in subsea engineering.
Knowledge of design requirements for cold regions for production and export systems.
Knowledge of subsea production system architectures, main components and key design drivers, including pigging, testing, hydrate, wax management and flow assurance issues, control systems, re-injection, intervention, and seismic.
Knowledge of main well system and topsides processing unit interfaces, including well instrumentation requirements, workovers, riser interfaces (inside a sub structure or via offloading to a tanker), and topsides systems for subsea equipment.
Knowledge of flowline and riser key design and installation drivers, including thermal insulation, installation requirements and limitations, design options and alternatives, flowline stability and buckling requirements.
Ability to challenge conventional practice by using innovation and new technology to reduce capital and operating costs.
Experience with risk mapping and mitigation.
Knowledge of requirements for engineering data collection for the design of systems.
Experience working within multi-disciplinary teams and the management of key interfaces.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and networking skills in working with internal and external company relationships.
Ability to define and prioritize issues and handle multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
Self motivated with the ability to work both independently and as a good team player.
Willingness and ability to learn some Russian.
Experience working with Russian Institutes.

If you are selected for the position, your employment will be contingent upon submission to and successful completion of a post-offer/pre-placement drug and alcohol screening as well as pre-placement verification of the information and qualifications provided during the selection process.
