Application Systems Analyst/Programmer

 

Smithsonian Business Ventures (SBV) seeks Application Systems Analyst/Programmers II-III (II Level - 1 vacancy, III Level - 1 vacancy) for its Herndon, Virginia location.  SBV consists of the Smithsonian and Air and Space Magazines, Retail Stores, Food Service and Concessions, Catalogue Sales, Licensing, and Smithsonian Journeys.  SBV produces approximately $170M in revenue annually to support the mission of Smithsonian Institution.

 

The successful candidate will cover all phases of the systems lifecycle including gathering requirements, design, development, test and implementation. A breadth of projects will be assigned to include reports, database applications, web applications and different software tools.  Assignments will include new development as well as maintenance projects.  The successful incumbent may also be asked to research existing off the shelf solutions to meet customer requirements.

 

Responsibilities Include:

? Work closely with customers to understand their project requirements and document requirements in requirements specifications.

? Formulates and defines system scope and objectives.

? Develop design specifications for assigned projects.

? Ability to clearly communicate requirements and design to the customer in order to obtain their feedback.

? Develop software according to the design specifications.

? Write and execute test plans.

? Build and populate relational databases as necessary.

? Develop expertise with third party in house software packages.  Maintain and enhance as required.

? Must have strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to read and analyze production code.

? Regularly provides guidance and training to less-experienced analyst/programmers

 

Qualifications:

? Candidates must possess a Bachelor of Science degree (BS from college or university in Computer Science, MIS or related field and/or 5-7 years related experience preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience).

? Development experience using Microsoft tools and technologies including ASP, Visual Basic, JavaScript, VBScript, Visual Interdev, Visual Studio.NET and SQL server 2000.

? Experience with AS/400 tools and programming languages (CL, RPG, Query/400 and SQL/400) is a plus.

? Experience with Island Pacific software or Lawson Accounting software is a plus.

? Experience with Enterprise reporting tools is a plus.

? Works well in a team environment and also has the ability to work independently with minimal instruction.

? Excellent customer service skills. Must be able to interact and communicate with customers at all levels of an organization.
