Backup/Recovery Systems Engineer

The position is located in Northbrook, IL

 

The purpose of the department is the purpose of this Department is to leverage the strengths of our diverse organization, and to deliver and maintain highly reliable hardware and software computing solutions.  The scope of this job is High performance team player to engineer large enterprise backup solution including local and remote sites.  Must show initiative to solve problems, make sound decisions and recommend solutions. Duties for this postion are analyze, design, implement and maintain enterprise-wide backup infrastructure to provide reliable and cost effective protection and recovery of data and to assure business continuity.  Ensure that the infrastructure is always capable of meeting requirements of diverse business units and new systems initiatives to recover from equipment failures or the accidental loss of vital files.

Partner with vendor representatives, platform engineers and application teams to solve problems and to develop and operationalize backup/restore solutions.  Research and evaluate products and potential technology upgrades for the infrastructure.  Develop and deliver results, recommendations and decisions in written and oral presentations to peers, clients or leadership.



 

The individual will be responsible for

 

1. Engineer/configure/support Netbackup software.  Formulate and define Netbackup specifications for enterprise use.

2. Ensure backup solution runs at peak performance through best practice configuration.

3. Install, configure, test and troubleshoot backup solutions on UNIX and Windows platforms.

4. Strong verbal and written communication skills to help instruct or guide customers onsite, online or via telephone.

5. Provide direction and recommendations on improvements in support of the overall backup configuration.

 

The skills required are:

 

1. Intermediate - Understanding of S/390, open systems (AIX, MS Windows, Solaris, HP)--certifications a plus.  Experience with LAN/WAN/SAN environment a plus.  Experience with SAN fabrics a plus.  Scripting/system programming a plus.

2. Advanced - Self-motivated with excellent can-do attitude and the ability to perform in a dynamic environment.

3. Intermediate - Quick learner with a desire to learn new tools and techniques. 

4. Intermediate - Enterprise project management skills highly desirable.

5. Advanced - Solid communication, organization and excellent customer skills - collaborative, team Player

 

Experience Required:

Requirements

5+ years experience with Veritas Netbackup or related software, plus technology experience in a large environment.  Experience with Veritas Netbackup versions 4.5, 5.1 or 6.x is preferred. Candidate should also have a working knowledge of related technologies such as UNIX and Windows operating systems, storage, networking, and security.  Acquainted with infrastructure hardware and software products from Brocade, HDS, and STK.  Strong verbal and written communications skills.  Technical and professional certifications are a plus.  College degree is preferred.  Major preference is Computer Science.
