DBA and Programmer

Fort Hays State University is a public four-year University (with some graduate programs) located in western Kansas.  It has an enrollment of roughly 8,000 students with a large on-line outreach program (including many students in China). 

 

This DBA/Programming position is in the Computing & Telecommunications unit of the University.  The DBA would work with systems administrators who have responsibility for a variety of applications.  This position also has some programming responsibilities with the New Development Group.  They program primarily in .NET (C#), but also support an open-source portal that is written in Java.  FHSU has a Tivoli Enterprise Directory Server (LDAP) and also uses tools developed by Starfire, Inc. to support single sign on for a variety of applications.  FHSU has a DBA who supports DB2.  We are looking for a DBA to help with Oracle, SQL-Server, and other assorted databases and to support the Directory services.

Computing & Telecommunications DBA Job Description

DBA DutiesInstall databases as needed.  This also includes service pack deployments.  Work closely with the server and application administrators as well as with the vendors to configure the databases to the applications.  FHSU has SQL-Server, Oracle, DB2 (UDB), and others.  Create backup plans ? Based on the business needs of FHSU (how valuable the data is), find the best solution for the budget and create a backup schedule around the plan. The DBA should raise the red flag if there are any vulnerabilities.   Test disaster recovery scenarios ? Perform regular random drills to test the backup plan and to test the integrity of the company?s backups.  Manage security ? Work with the networking and server staff and the product planners to determine how much access the application will need to the database. The production DBA is the gatekeeper of this access typically. Size machines ? He or she will take in the benchmarking evidence and find out what type of machine will be needed for deployment. Performance tuning and optimization ? Tunes the physical layer of the database. He or she may choose to do this by tuning the file structure and organization, scheduling index rebuilds, and any hardware-type decisions. Maintain the Enterprise Directory (LDAP-based) and support single sign on systems.  

Programming DutiesWork with the New Development Group on programming new administrative and academic applications and supporting existing systems (such as uPortal). The programming environment includes Java and .NET (C#).
