Electronics Design Engineer

Job Description:


As a key member of McData?s Systems Hardware team, the individual will help define and design McData?s next generation Director family. Responsibilities include system and board level specifications, PCB design capture or FPGA development, and signal integrity analysis. As a leader in the team, the individual is expected to specify proper design procedures and processes, to provide cross-functional coordination with other teams, and to provide technical leadership and mentoring to more junior engineers.

 

Candidate requirements

Minimum of 12 years of experience in one or more of the following areas: High-speed board design, with processor subsystem design a plus ASIC or large FPGA designs using Verilog RTL Gigabit signal integrity analysis and circuit design Hands on knowledge of lab techniques and hardware debug skills Good spoken and written communication skills B.S.E.E required, M.S.E.E. preferred

 

Scope: Provides leadership in the definition, design, simulation, building and validation of electronic subsystems and products in cooperation with other engineers from various disciplines. Uses professional concepts to resolve complex issues. Coordinates all phases of project implementation. Provides consulting assistance with design issues, technical problem solving, training & planning. Provides direction and support for other engineers and technicians.

 

Essential Functions

Participates in electronics systems architecture and definition using an understanding of electronic systems design options while taking cost, performance and flexibility into consideration.

Develops electronics hardware module specifications. Designs and implements hardware modules using various hardware system design techniques. Develops, organizes and manages schedules and budgets for development projects while meeting the design criteria. Handles changes to project scope with minimal impact to schedules.

Participates in the review of designs completed by other engineers and provides feedback on design strategies and implementation.

Tests and verifies hardware modules using electronic measurement equipment and using diagnostic concepts to prove design integrity.

Provides direction and support for other engineers and technicians. Provides consulting assistance with design issues, technical problem solving, training & planning associated with new product development as well as maintenance and enhancements to existing products.

Monitors current applicable device technology and suggests or adapts designs for use in new or existing technology for improved performance or cost reduction.

Interfaces with direct management, other members of the department, Manufacturing, Software Engineering and Customer Support as well as external Component vendors, CAD equipment and software vendors and customers.

Other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Job Qualifications

Education: Bachelors Degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering or equivalent working experience.

Related Work Experience: 8 - 11 years in electronics design and development with emphasis on high speed communications systems, programmable logic, microprocessors and computer systems.

Other Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Good verbal and written communication skills required. Must be familiar with the use of word processing software. Requires an understanding of various electronics system design techniques. Must be able to creatively apply various concepts to design problems to obtain optimum solutions within the design constraints. Able to consider implications beyond those of immediate project. Must be familiar with various hardware logic families, programmable logic, and Application Specific Integrated Circuits and microprocessors. Requires familiarity with electronic measurement equipment.. Requires familiarity with diagnostic concepts and use to prove design integrity. Ability to work independently yet seek advice and direction from others when necessary. Requires initiative, adaptability, planning and organizing skills. Ability to coordinate efforts of groups of people to accomplish related tasks.
