Performance Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Director of Technology Support Services, to perform simple to complex and skilled work in the programming, installation, repair, preventive maintenance, and modifications of the District's modern automated office equipment, telecommunications equipment, and facilities; to handle hardware, telecommunications, and system software problems in various locations throughout the District; may act as a lead to oversee lower level technical staff; perform other related duties as required. Incumbents may be assigned to positions, which provide specialized technical support that is concentrated in one of the following areas:
Telecommunications Support - Emphasis will be on hardware and telecommunications related duties and skills
Microcomputer Support - Emphasis will be on software related duties and resolution of end user problems.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Work with Active Directory, Exchange, SQL databases, Security Groups, Distribution Lists, Wireless and various other applications and systems.
- Perform system programming, moves, installations, repairs, tests, adjustments, and preventive maintenance servicing a wide range of telecommunications equipment, terminals, and modern automated office equipment.
- Perform system-wide troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repairs to the component level or notify and oversee the work of vendor engineers or other District staff.
- Perform installations, tests, repairs, maintenance, and modifications to various fiber optic and copper cabling for LANs and WANs throughout the District including such areas as: manholes, buildings, through walls, attics, and crawl spaces.
- Consult with and provide assistance to technical and non-technical District staff and vendors on problems related to hardware, telecommunication, and system software functions.
- Perform various lead functions in the assigned work area.
- Draw and maintain detailed LAN and WAN maps.
- Research and order related parts and equipment.
- Train District staff on the proper use of related equipment.
- Research new technologies and recommend procurement.
- Develop and maintain various databases, logs, and records.
- Update maintenance and engineering manuals.
- Operate district vehicles.
- Perform related work as required. ?
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
1. System programming, maintenance, and documentation.
2. Switching, multiplexing, Ethernet, ATM, fiber optic and other modern technologies used in LAN's and WAN's.
3. Troubleshooting techniques used to isolate defective components.
4. Safe and proper use of materials, tools, and equipment used in the installation, repair, maintenance servicing of modern automated office equipment, telecommunication equipment, terminals, cabling, and peripherals.
5. Modern automated office, telecommunication, peripheral equipment and terminology.
6 Modern operating systems, BIOS, modern automated office application software (e.g. Excel, WordPerfect, Windows, and Access), and related technology.
Knowledge of:
7. Appropriate safety precautions used in the handling of materials such as chemical cleaners, solvents, and adhesives.
8. Math application to electronics.
9. Principles of electronics - analog and digital concepts.
Ability to:
10. Perform simple to complex work in system programming, installation, repair, maintenance, and servicing of modern automated office equipment, telecommunication equipment, LAN and WAN networks.
11. Function in a lead capacity and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
12. Research new automated technologies through various sources in order to make recommendations for enhancements to current systems and prepare various written and oral reports.
13. Troubleshoot and resolve complex system failures to related equipment.
14. Use chemicals such as cleaners, solvents, adhesives, and hand tools common to electronics work in a safe manner.
15. Develop and maintain simple to complex records, logs, databases, diagrams, training procedures and related materials.
16. Understand and operate various test equipment used in component level repair (e.g. oscilloscope, digital volt meter, logic probes, etc.).
17. Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices; possession of a valid California Driver's license.
18. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
19. Use modern office application software including but limited to (Excel, WordPerfect, Windows, and Access).
Education and Experience:
20. Completion of at least three years college level course work in subject areas related to microcomputer support and data communications.
21. Five years of full-time experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of modern automated office and data communications equipment preferably with experience providing support to visual arts.
22. Or, any combination of education and experience that would produce the required qualifications.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
23. Strength to lift, carry, push and /or pull 50 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to pounds
24. Physical ability to work effectively in an environment, which is typical of this position including crawling through basements, attics, and climbing stairs, ladders, and rooftops.
25. Prolonged periods of standing, stooping, kneeling, sitting, and walking.
26. Work in confined spaces.
27. Willingness to work occasional on-call, overtime, or irregular hours in emergency situations.
28. Exposure to cleaning solvents, glues, paints, ceiling insulation, dust, and insects.

Conditions of Employment
This is a regular, full-time, 12-month per year position. The normal hours of work will be 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and the effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. ?

Pay Philosophy
Starting salaries for support staff positions begin at Step-1 of the salary range. The first salary advancement is at the end of the 6-month probationary period. Further advancements are on an annual basis.
Starting salaries for management and supervisory positions are based on a combination of education, qualifications and experience. Initial placement is within the starting salary range. Further advancements are based on initial salary placement.
Starting salaries for academic positions are based on a combination of education and experience. Initial placement is within the starting salary range. Further advancements are based on longevity and professional development. An additional annual stipend is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution. ?

The District provides a comprehensive benefit program effective the first calendar day of the month following the first day of regular employment. Dental and vision care plans for employees and dependents, and life insurance and income protection plans for employees are fully paid by the District.
