Network Manager II and III (Occupational Base)

Minimum/General Experience:

The network manager applies specialized knowledge of the installation, operation and maintenance of computer networks to insure that the network operates as desired. The network manager also supervises or leads a team of other computer specialists, such as network specialists or telecommunications specialists. The network manager reviews trouble reports, assigns responsibility for correcting the problem and monitors completion of outstanding problems.


Network Manager III


Minimum/General Experience: Four-year degree in computer science or business or closely related field. Technical certification in network operations and maintenance and 7 years experience in computer network operations. Experience in leading teams and/or supervising work groups. Experience with DoS computer network systems and operating environments, including OpenNet and ClassNet, and COTS software, including MicroSoft Server and Desktop operating Systems Office suite and Outlook email. Experience in providing user support and trouble-shooting for these products.



Functional Responsibility: Serves specified organizational units through the provision of satisfactory computing services. Assists management in the operation of networks. Must stay current with latest developments in Microsoft server and client operating Systems and other LAN and WAN technology. Provides hardware and software trouble shooting for the Local and Wide Area Network. Assists in the operation of all software and network operations. Submits written recommendations relative to identification, evaluation and implementation of database and application server technology, testing of new systems software and new applications software. Provides technical services in the analysis and installation of computing facilities, including installation planning and site preparation. Analyzes, evaluates, and tests software/hardware problems and submits findings to management officials. Maintains and troubleshoots intra-system telecommunications. Monitors each system and adjusts/configures each for maximum system performance. Serves as the network and data center technical advisor, making recommendations on the type and amount of network and data center equipment needed. Resolves hardware problems. Maintains inventory of all data center equipment and supplies. Submits recommendations relative to the identification of supplies, equipment, power, environmental controls and furniture. Schedules or performs the repair and/or replacement of defective computer equipment. Maintains close contact with all elements of the Department of State and other government agencies in order to effectively deal with problems and organizational issues.

Minimum/General Experience: Four-year degree in computer science or business or closely related field. Technical certification in network operations and maintenance and 5 years experience in computer network operations. Experience in leading teams and/or supervising work groups. Experience with DoS computer network systems and operating environments, including OpenNet and ClassNet, and COTS software, including MicroSoft Server and Desktop operating Systems Office suite and Outlook email. Experience in providing user support and trouble-shooting for these products.

Must stay current with latest developments in Microsoft server and client operating systems and other LAN technology. Assists with hardware and software trouble shooting for the Local Area Network. Assists with designing quality metric disciplines. Assists with the analyzing, evaluation, and testing of software/hardware problems and submits findings to management officials. Assists with troubleshooting intra-system telecommunications. Resolves hardware problems. Maintains inventory of all data center equipment and supplies. Submits recommendations relative to the identification of supplies, equipment, power, environmental controls and furniture. Schedules or performs the repair and/or replacement of defective computer equipment.
