Responsibilities:

Information Technology is an integrated group of departments whose basic objective is to provide information, data processing and communication services and systems to support the business and management activities of Sentry Insurance.

The Database Administration team, within Data Services, manages and maintains the physical data structures of the organization on an Enterprise-wide basis.

Specific responsibilities for the Database Specialist Sr. include:

Provides database support for data warehousing environments and other business applications utilizing Oracle as the database platform.

Installs, maintains and utilizes third party tools, where required, for the purposes of backup, recovery, monitoring and schema change management.

Monitors existing database systems? performance and recommends effective utilization of resources.  Investigates potential system performance problems, implements emergency recovery procedures for application databases, as well as manages the physical storage of the data.  Communicates potential problems, enhancements and performance considerations to Applications Development and Data Services management.

The incumbent must work toward resolving problems in crisis situations: and test and install new systems in a timely manner in coordination with project requirements.

Researches, evaluates recommends database educational material, and communicates trends in database technology to various levels of the Sentry IT organization.

Maintains knowledge of a dynamic vendor market to effectively address the development of database software systems and the ongoing demands for enhancements to existing systems to provide efficient services to users.  Monitors industry trends and advises on how to best leverage latest technologies.

Participates in research and testing of new database software products.  Following selection, incumbent installs new software products and coordinates procedures and utilization in support of database technology.

Improves and maintains technical expertise by attending vendor training classes and conferences, and by reviewing technical manuals and journals which support the future development of integrated corporate database systems and enhancements to existing systems at Sentry.

Contacts include all levels of Sentry IT employees, operations, business users, vendor sales and service personnel, and industry related contacts.

 

Qualifications:

Seven to ten years as an Oracle Database Administrator is required.  Candidates must possess a deep working knowledge of the platform and associated administrative tools.  Experience in developing and maintaining a multi terabyte Infrastructure is a plus.  Working knowledge of additional database platforms such as SQL Server or DB2 would be considered beneficial.  Communications skills are necessary, both written and oral.  Demonstrated sense of logic, decision making and problem resolution skills are necessary.  Ability to work in a team environment is required.  Ability to work on-call hours is also necessary.
